Me and 2 buds went out early Saturday, set up a pavilion tent, various targets n spinners.

We had a couple 1858 rems, a 1851 navy and a walker, all 44, my new old .36 cal ? Pietta 1851 not quite right looking, but shot great, my lemat, 1842 Springfield 69 calsmooth bore, and a .50 Lyman plains rifle.

Am very happy I found a old Lyman round ball mold for that 69 cal, no nor buying balls for that sucker!

We had only a single brainfart of the day. One guy loaded his 1851 44 backasswards, powder, bore butter, ball, compress, and had stuff oozing thru the nips. He was distraught. I keep a screw and washer in my range bag to pull revolver balls. Pulled the nips. Blasted the gunk out with some non Chloe brake cleaner, and he was back shooting within 15 minutes. For our only hiccup, it wasn't a bad day. ;)

I might have some after action pictures, I'll take a look.

Forgot to mention.

In a moment of weakness a while back I picked up one of those century PW87 winchester 1887 lever action shotgun clones.

Took it out as well. fed it a variety of low brass and high brass shells, basically tried to see what would make it malfunction. Watched a few video reviews, so knew what to expect.

Have pretty much decided that it will digest any low or high brass shell. It's only picky a little about how you run the action.. you can't limp wrist the lever down to eject and chamber a shell. It likes a good energetic down-up. if you slow-mo, it won't eject.. it extracts, then leaves the hull laying up top, nor will it trip and pull a cartridge from the feed tube. but if you give it a good energetic motion, it runs just fine. no fails to fire. no jambs, no sticky ejects, to extractor slipping off rims, no damage to rims. There is no trigger take up. once cocked, it's got no trigger travel. trigger is a hair stiffer than a colt SA revolver, but not much. Basic bead front, and you are just looking down the tube from atop the receiver.

finish it either a very thin blacking or a very thin black paint. the rear of the action that dives in and out of the receiver upon levering is showing finish wear on corners. wood under the barrell looks like it has 2 locating dowels into the receiver and a retaining screw. there is a small gap from wood to receiver, maybee 3/32 maybee less. doesn't seem to migrate, but I'll keep an eye on it. forgot to look at the joint prior to shooting. Good basic (cheap) shotgun. Points and goes to the shoulder good. Nice even pattern at 10 yards on cardboard with #8 as a test. no swirls, figure 8's or clumps. even dispersion from more concentrated center area to less concentrated outer area. I wouldn't trade my pump gun for it.. but it ain't bad.

Loads with the action about 3/4 open. initial loading was stiff, but at the end of the day, was like loading any other spring tube scattergun.

Tube holds 5, I see people doing 5 then sticking one in the bore.. but I didn't take her apart yet to look at the extractor so didn't want to close her on a shell.

Fun gun on the cheap.. and really.. don't shoot like a cheap gun either..
