Last weekend a friend of mine has been working as a landscaper and dug out a gun that was buried in the ground, after seeing the pictures I was wondering what kind of gun would this be ? Is there anyone that could identify its type ?
Yep the gunsmith would have used what was available and back then that was a forged welded iron barrel that was intended to use black powder rather than compressed air.
Those old air rifles weren't the bb guns we moderns think of when we hear 'air rifle'.
The air gun Lewis and Clark used developed similar energy to a .45 acp round fired from a 1911 colt.
The air rifle theory makes a little more sense to me. No gun i can think of with that big of a tube in the buttstock. The size of that tube and the extreme angle of it is why based off of those pics i couldnt even guarantee it was a rifle. Looks like one.
I'm still thinking air rifle--but there is another possibility. Evans rifle. That
round tube COULD be the shell of the Evans helical buttstock magazine. http://weaponsman.com/?p=8771

I read up a little bit on the Evans rifle and I think you may be on to something there. Configuration matches. They actually made some (on a special order) for Canada. From there to England would be plausible! Perhaps someone journeyed to Canada for a Moose or Bear hunt, picked one up and took it back with them. British Commonwealth and all ol' Boy.
