Also have a Beretta M9, Walther P1 and an Uzi Model B Carbine, but a picture of those items will have to wait till Friday when dear one gets back from Washington.
Mak, that is one nice P-38. The back story is pretty darn good too! I oughta just bite the bullet and go find one rather than talk about it any longer....
Sharps, My Godfather Norm Nelson (NRA publications, Sports Afield, Outdoor Life author and author of two books on deer hunting, both can be found on Amazon) is in an end of life scenario unfortunately this day and age. He has leukemia and considering his age (89) they chose to do nothing and let him live his life out without going through the regiment of radiation and drugs. They are giving him fresh blood every two weeks for the time being. I gotta get over to Spokane soon to see him. I doubt he'll last the year.
The Walther P38: Godfather of the modern combat handgun
The P38 was so influential in modern combat handgun design that it's almost impossible to talk about the subject without mentioning it. If you have only ever handled the Berettas, SIGs, and S&W's and Rugers of today, then get introduced to a P38, chances are great that it will seem uncannily familiar, natural and comfortable.
All of these aforementioned guns copied the double-action/single action trigger, take down lever, sights, and general mechanics of the P38. The Walther gun itself was outright copied in Croatia as the PHP pistol and it can be argued that the Beretta 51 and later 92 series of handguns are nothing but a P38 with a full-length slide and frame. Even holsters designed for the Beretta fit P38s.
My Dad died in '91 (lung cancer). My (maternal) Grandmother lived to be 101 (1907- 2008), Mom's cancer diagnosis came in '09. She died in 2012 right where I'm sitting now.
My oldest brother and myself were by her side as she went peacefully. It was as good as it could have been, but it's still hard.
Cancer sucks. Cancer of the blood, brain, brain stem (DIPG) boobs, colon,..... Cancer anything is a tough road. Yet one out of three of us will die from it.
If we had put as much money into researching cancer in the 1980's and 1990's as we did AIDS research, we'd have a lot more cure today.
Well I only have one so here goes, it's a Ruger KP95 and eats just about anything you throw at it. I really don't shoot it much, it may have seen 250 rounds all together but it's a good shooter and serves its purpose. I think I paid something like $250 when I bought it new maybe 10-15 years ago. It ain't purdy but I do like it.
I have liked every 9mm pistol I have had but I can't afford to keep them all and there is always something new that takes my eye. No longer owned but no complaints about them were the Glock 19, S&W 5906, S&W 669 and a S&W M&P Pro 9 with 4" barrel I sold in order to buy one with a 5" barrel. Present inventory is just two the S&W M&P Pro 9 and the Sig Sauer P226 MK-15 with Sig's own red dot sight.
I'm pretty much in the same boat Hawg. I don't necessarily dislike the 9mm as much as I find it utterly uninteresting. Being a "history nut" I can't and won't argue its history but other than a Luger or P-38 I have no desires to own a handgun so chambered. I had a couple S&W 39's, 40 years ago, and wasn't particularly impressed with handgun or cartridge.
Regarding the modern semi-auto handguns I'm not much of a fan of any of them. There's nothing to be taken away from their performance and for the most part their dependability but, as with the cartridge, I find them completely unappealing....ugly, in other words. Even though they are the hot ticket item today they just aren't my thing when it comes to handguns....
Glocks....I don't despise them but you'll never find one in my gun safe.
Never saw a need for a 9. Got 38s if I want to shoot a 36-caliber bullet. Got 45s if I want to shoot someone.
Buuut, here come Y2K. Banks were gonna fail, airplanes would fall out if the sky, the poop would strike the rotary oscillater, and both the Russians and the UN were gonna invade.
Figgered I needed to be able to resupply from the enemy - whoever it was.
38, check. 45, check. 308, check. 223, check. 762x39, buy mini 30, check. Better get a 9.
Bought a Commander-size top half. Figgered, if needed, I could stick it on a 45.
Once the barrier had been broken, they seemed to just - appear.
