Many have 22 rimfire rifles. We're all curious how they perform. Hopefully we can keep the guidelines simple enough so you can just go out an shoot then post the results to something that lists the rifle, the ammo, sight mechanisms, and range. Having a downloadable target as suggested would be a good benchmark (makes it easier to decipher). May be on the target some particulars could be listed so the same data is captured. Placing the thread on your "watch thread" will keep it alive and hopefully used for a bit. If enough interest comes of this, may be a thumb tack might help. Hopefully within the next month we can start seeing some results as weather and time permits.
Can we see some sample targets? Are we talking about a 50-yard target or 25-yard, or both? We could have divisions such as; bench rest, 3-position, open sights, etc.
I like this. Post a downloadable target, then you shoot and put the rifle, ammo, sights, and yardage on the target in one corner. measure the group and post a pic.
We should use a score-able target. You must be able to shoot a tight group, but also have the group in the intended location.
The winner is the highest score.
Hope to have some youngsters post as well. They will probably beat my socks off. But that's ok. I will visit some fishing sights before I post so I have a battery of excuses at the ready.
Here is a simple target that would work good at 100 yards. We could put 5 rounds on each target for a total of 20 rounds, the tie breaker if needed would be the greater number of rounds in the X
Bullseye=5 points, next ring is 4 points and next is 3 points, anything outside is 0. Maximum points available is 100
Anyone got better idea.
I don't know about 100 yards, I can't even see that far with the peep sight on my Mossberg 42M-B. I just don't think I would shoot a scoped rifle if I joined in this competition.
1. shoot from 100 yards off of bags or tripod
2. Any Rimfire 22lr rifle, any scope, any ammunition
3. Sight in as many rounds as required
4. Shoot total of 20 rounds (see target in previous post)
5. Highest score wins
6. Post a picture of your completed target in this thread
Yow, I just printed out that target and will clearly have to bow out. I don't own a scoped 22 rifle and there's now way in Heaven I could see to shoot that target. You boys have fun.
I'd like to play too but the only range I can really shoot at only goes out to 50 yards. Sounds like I wouldn't have much of a chance anyway compared to some of you folks. I would like to toss it out there, maybe we could have a few different classes for lack of a better word. For instance I'm not a benchrest shooter with a gazillion powered scope, a $3,000 rifle and one of those gadgets that holds the rifle completely still. "If" I use a bench I usually just put my elbow down or use a folded up a soft rifle case. How about we have an off-hand class and maybe separate open iron sights and scoped rifles. Who knows, maybe we could toss in pistols too?
I don't have a $3000 rifle either, I have a CZ-453. I suggested above to shoot off of bags (shooting bag, sand bag or any alternative) or tri-pod, that means no ransom rests or fixed rests are allowed.
As stated above, we should keep it simple. Shoot what you got, score it and post the pictures, what could be simpler?
I'm with One Shot. Let's use what we have and just enjoy almost shooting together. I look forward to seeing what you pro's can do but for me, I'll just try my best and share what I can.
A few years ago another forum that is caliber specific did something like this. You signed up and were sent one target. Five shots and send the photo in. I didn't even rate the duct tape ribbon but it was fun trying.
If we can print them out it will be soooo easy to do.
I like this idea. I'm good with either 50 or 100 yds. But perhaps we could have one thread for 50yds and a second for 100yds? Easier to keep track of the targets that way
Just printed out the 50 yd target. Hopefully it's fine to print grayscale. I should try a few more types of ammo in my Mark II Savage for this - maybe some match grade. It likes both CCI Standard 40 gr and Federal American Eagle HV 40 gr pretty well. Automatch is plenty accurate for plinking but wouldn't ever use it for a match. Flyers are too common. AE 40 gr is a bit hard to find at a good price. Was getting it at Gander, but they are no more. At least for a while.
I'll be using a table, chair, and sandbags.
Edit: I notice the 100 yd target favors the left a bit. Is that an advantage of some sort for you, rclairflr?
Like many have stated. Just shoot and have fun. Record the distance, type ammo, type rifle, and type sights/scope "ON THE TARGET." Those that compete will compete and the rest of us will just shoot and post. Try not to have a target w/ 99 holes! You choose, 3 rounds, 5 rounds, something easy to observe from the posted target.
It's your choice to use regular lgs budget ammo or targeting ammo or use a 223 case to manage which rounds to fire, etc. Just write it on the target.
It appears this is morphing into something similar to the old postal matches which some groups still shoot. I haven't looked at the print out target but if it's as small as some say I'm also out. I shoot nothing but open or iron sights consequently the target must at least be visible, regardless of the distance.
From the initial query I thought this was going to be shoot your rifle best you can and let's see what it and the shooter can do, purely for fun and comparison, not a competition with a winner. Group size should determine how good a shooter and his rifle can shoot. Unless it's going to turn into a match I don't see a need for scoring rings or a standard target.
I sight my 22's in for 25 yards because about all they're used for is vermin and squirrel hunting. I am not averse to shooting 50 and 100 yard groups, that in and of itself would be fun as I have no idea how good my rifles do or don't shoot at those distances. But to turn it into a competition, no sir, I will have to bow out. 22 matches hold no interest for me.
I'm thinking one target at 25 yards with my FIL's old single shot with iron sights, 50 yard with either a Charger or 10-22 and a 100 yard target with the 10-22 scoped.
Im in for fun! Ill shoot my MKII @ 50 and 100 and my savage 62 at 25 and post up. Who cares what you shoot, or how far. Just shoot and have fun!!!
