Remington 1100 gas ports

I have a buddy that has an 1100. We took it out shooting the yesterday and it worked fine until after about 30 shells, then it wouldn't eject the hull and cycle the action. It would still shoot, but only as a single-shot. We ended up using my 1100 as it worked perfectly. The gas ports were clean before we took it out but seemed clogged up after only about 30 rounds went thru it. Any ideas on why the ports would clog up so quickly? BTW, we were both using the same ammo if that means anything.

That's pretty unusual to see ports clog up that quick. Now did you mess with his two steel rings again while you were out there shooting?;) I remember that was the problem before with his gun. By any chance did the 2 steel ring splits get lined up. They are supposed to be turned away from each other. I know you said the ammo was the same, but after the 1st box of 25 rounds did one of you start shooting another box that may have had a different Dram or shot load.

Good memory. The pistons were turned correctly with the splits opposite each other, and the O-ring was good. We used the same 100 rounds of ammo the whole time, Winchester heavy target load #8. I also have a Winchester 1400 MkII and both that and my 1100 ate 'em up no problemo. o_O

Something greasy? He used heavy-duty wheel bearing grease (just kidding). Nope, no grease. We clean both 1100s using Ballistol. Good stuff.

Only gas operated shotgun I own is a Remington Sportsman 58 and I take a pipe cleaner and run it through the two gas ports in the barrel making sure they are clean and free of goop after I clean the bore.

Pipe cleaner, huh? Sounds good. I'll try that. I just use a teeny-weeny drill bit on mine.

Lots of people suggest the use of pipe cleaners. I forget the size drill bit that just fits in there but it would work better than that smaller one you are using. Just don't use it in a drill, only work it with your fingers. But that still doesn't explain why your buddies ports gummed up after only 30 rounds. Unless they weren't as clean as he thought they were. Your buddy is lucky he has you looking out for his gun.;)

The drill bit I use is just the right size for the hole but I like the pipe cleaner idea. I kinda look after his 1100 cuz I got my 1100 around 1979. It's 47 years old and worx great! I traded an Ithaca 37 (LAPD Special) and $50 for the thing. I wanted to learn skeet but I was having problems breaking clays with a 20" barrel. :) Couldn't be happier with the 1100.
