My poor shoulder

I decided today would be a good day for a range trip. I loaded 416 Taylor ammo over the weekend with 350gr speer mag-tips. I also loaded a ladder for my 270WSM with 130gr federal pulls.
I sighted the new zeiss scope on the 416 at 50yds first. It took way more shots than it should have. OW!! I believe the scope base holes aren't straight. Fantastic!
Next I sighted in the 270WSM. It got the other zeiss scope I bought. 5 shots and it was drilling the bullseye at 50yds.
I got my chronograph and targets set up at 100yds. I took one shot from each rifle and then let the barrels cool for 5 minutes. I've decided that the 416 Taylor has to have a recoil pad. The plastic butt plate just isn't cutting it for a day at the range. I put about 25 rounds through it before my shoulder couldn't take another shot. My shoulder is sore, bruised and swollen. I did find a load that looks promising just over 2,400fps.
I only got 3 charge weights into the 270WSM ladder. 2 of which were decent groups but, not decent enough. More testing once my shoulder stops hurting lol.
I also brought the 223 along. It did pretty good at 50yds. The trigger is fantastic. I'm not sure what it is but, it definitely isn't factory.

My shoulder would beg to differ lol.

I wish that I was feeling your pain.
No, probably not lol. It's going to be a rough night at work.
I'm heading to the range in a few minutes. But i will be taking it a lot easier on my shoulder than you. I'll be shooting my browning SA .22, and uberti 1873 in .45 colt. Lots of pain free fun!:):):)
Now that sounds enjoyable.

I usually stuff a winter glove in my shirt and shoot away! Helps quite a bit ;)

My 7 rem mag is fairly heavy. Here's a recoil comparison of the 7 rem mag and 416 Taylor. The weight of the rifle is the first column, recoil is the second.

I was reading in an American Medical Journal  that the internal application of beer has medicinal properties on joints. I'm thinking you may need a few to get the necessary healing.
That may be a good idea. I wonder if jägermeister has any medicinal properties?:D

As much as I'd love to have a big bore rifle I'd have to just end up looking at it. I've got way to many plates and screwed holding my shoulders together.:(

I do enjoy watching guys shoot them though.:D

From a gal who has blown both shoulders out of the soket; "Please be careful with your shoulders"!
Once you really damage them they are never the same again.
Ice, ibuprofen, and rest. Then get a good shoulder pad and soft butt plate and have some more fun!

The shoulder is the weakest joint in the body. But my main concern would be cervical C5-7 neck area. That jolt has to whip those joints. Hyskore makes a dual damper (shock absorbers) rest. Cabelas has the one I use: http://www.cabelas.com/product/HYSKORE-MACHINE-REST/1933545.uts?searchPath=/browse.cmd?categoryId=734095080&CQ_search=hyskore
It is good up to 300 win mag. I imagine it could be modified for more recoil.
Hyskore may have newer ones that handle more. You could add some recoil mgmt in the base attachment.
The two pix are from the pdf manual.

I'd imagine a lead sled would work as well but, as howlnmad said, that would take the fun out of having a big bore lol.
A slip on limbsaver pad should do the trick to keep the pain away. Any amount of padding will be better than plastic lol.

I slowed down a video of me shooting it and there's all kinds of movement. Fortunately, nothing else hurts except where the stock was sitting lol.

I'm sitting here wondering why you used the lighter bullet in the .416? All the great 40 bores were built around a 400 gr. bullet. It's rather obvious you aren't actually afraid of recoil. A little gunshy from a sore shoulder is only normal but that will pass.....then in another 20 years it may become permanent...and normal....:D....and yes, I am being a bit of a smart aleck....:D I rarely shoot full house loads in my 450/400 and worked up a 410 gr. cast bullet load for fun.

I went with 350's for two reasons. One is price. The 350's were $0.72/ea. 400gr are in the $1.00/ea range on the "inexpensive" side of the spectrum.
Reason two is availability. I plan to hunt the dangerous Pennsylvania whitetail with it so, I need an expanding bullet. My bullet of choice in the 400gr category would be the Hornady DGX. However, finding them in stock at a reasonable price has been challenging.

Right now I'm working with reloader 17 in my loads, a lot of reloader 17 lol. On paper it's not a very "suitable" powder for the cartridge but, since it's a high energy powder(in the 4350 burn rate) quickload puts it to give the highest velocities with both 350 and 400gr bullets.
I just need to find an accurate load. I've seen some decent groups on the web from "more suitable" powders........I'm hoping to do better than those.

I don't know the situation at the moment but when I started working with my 450/400 even the Hornady Interlock was scarce as hens teeth. I have two friends who also shoot 450/400's and we all experienced the same thing with the Interlocks, they coppered the bore quite heavily at the standard 2100 fps. Hopefully the DGX addressed that problem.

For those saber toothed Pennsylvania, Cape whitetails a cast bullet at about 1500 fps out of that rifle seems ideal.

The DGX is a copper washed steel jacket. The Speer mag-tips are copper jacketed. I'll have to give it a cleaning this weekend and see what the bore looks like.

A cast bullet would probably work very well. That will probably be a future adventure.
