I'm going to acquire a Sako Vixen single shoot pistol chambered for 6 PPC USA that I'm considering for the up coming deer season and was wondering if any of you folks have used that cartridge with a 70-75 gr. bullet ? I have looked at Sierra, Speer, Nosler, Hornady, and Berger and not one of them make a bullet of 70-75 gr. for deer hunting. The reason for 70 gr. is the barrel has a 1:14 rate of twist and anything heavier then 70-75 gr. will not stabilize and the 70 gr. bullets are only for varmints.
I looked at several different places and found nothing like what you're asking for. Then I remembered a story I read many years back about a small 6mm wildcat, a 6mm/222 Remington. The guy that built the gun did so for his very small statured wife, he had the same problems finding suitable bullets. He surmised that using a 70-75 grain soft point (I think it was a Hornady) and because of the reduced velocity because of the small case capacity, that it may perform like a hunting bullet, and it did. His wife used it as her hunting rifle with several reported kills on mule deer and antelope.
I found in a gun store in the Detroit area (Michigun) the last remaining three boxes of Hornady 6mm/.243, 70 gr, Traditional hunting bullets. So I'm set to use that Sako pistol in 6 PPC USA for deer season.
