Hopkins and Allen Manuf on the barrel
Lever opens (breaks) the gun. Can' t find this one anywhere online. Anybody?
The model/serial # 2538 matches all parts
A few years ago I came into possession of an 1890's era Hopkins & Allen rifle, in researching it to find out age and to get schematics for the damaged or missing parts I ended up finding out some back ground info on Hopkins & Allen.
The Hopkins & Allen Manufacturing company was started in 1868 as a firearms manufacturing business and marked their products under that name.
In 1874 Merwin Hulbert, a firearms retailing company got ahold of 50% of the company and most of Hopkins firearms post 1874 will have Hopkins & Allen Manufcturing Co. Norwich Conn. on the first line and Merwin Hulbert Co. Sole Agents New York USA on a second line under the Hopkins name.
In 1896 Merwin Hulbert went bankrupt and Hopkins & Allen was reorganized in 1898 as Hopkins & Allen Arms Co.
If your Shotgun isn't market with the Merwin Hulbert name it's possible that it is older than 1874. As it is marked Hopkins & Allen Manufacturing rather than Hopkins & Allen Arms Co. it definitely pre dates 1898.
And that is probably one of the coolest break action shotguns I've ever seen.
Please post some full length pictures of it and good clear pictures of any and all markings.
