If you had the choice of a 7" or 10" free floating quad rail for a 16" barrel with a carbine gas system using a low profile gas block, which would you choose?
The use will not be competition, just plinking and if it performs well, reserved for longer 223 range only off a bench.
If you would not use a quad rail, what would be your choice?
I would choose a 14 or 15 inch free floating round tube, because it just looks better than the quad rail (at least to me).
Here are pictures of two ARs, one has a quad rail (7.62X39) and one is a Wylde with round slotted tube. Both of them are 16 inches. You can't put anything on the round one but to me is just looks slicker.
I really prefer a tube without slots as shown on this 20 inch with 15 inch round tube.
7" will only partially cover the gas block, it's generally 6 3/4" from the gas block to the front of the upper receiver. I have 13" and 15" on most of mine and prefer the 13" for no particular reason.
From your usage description-10" and go with the quad rail,it's probably cheaper because everyone wants keymod/mlok.There's no sense spending money on stuff you won't/don't use.
I've bought most of mine from these guys. Just picked up one of their "blem" easy install ones, it's a very interesting design. I wanted a rail on the bottom though and the bottom slot was too narrow to add the m-lock bolt-on rail sections, so I slapped it on the mill and widened the slot so it would.
Just noticed your post "after" I just completed my order.
I got on BCA and ordered the low profile .750 gas block GBA-750, Carbine gas tube CGT-15 and the MLOK(10)-15 handrail. The rail comes w/ the nut, screws, spacers. https://www.bearcreekarsenal.com/accessories/bca-10-mlok-hand-rail-anodized-mlok-10-bca
BCA has treated me really well. Free barrel, military discount, easy to speak to on the phone (nice folks).
I liked the look of George's rail so went with that. It was available and I get my military discount on their site.
Famous last words are: I have almost everything I need to finish off the ar as long as I can find my completed lower somewhere in the garage. I do need to get a couple mlok rail sections for the bi-pod and SEBTF (something else bound to fit).
Is this build with the free 16 inch Wylde barrel from Bear Creek? If so, what length gas tube did you buy for it? I am guessing it takes a carbine length tube.
I think I am going to do something very weird with the build around that free barrel I got. I think I am going to have the upper and lower receiver cerekoted in SILVER and make it all look like stainless steel and keep the small parts (bolt release, safety switch, mag release, forward assist, etc.) all black. I have a silver BCG and am hoping I can find a SS charging handle. Then I am going to buy one of those wooden furniture kits. It should look wild!
EDIT: Never mind about the gas tube question, I just read the first post again!!
Here's where I'm at with the BCA barrel I got for Veterans' day. Gotta wait for some more "fun money" to free up to get my BCG and charging handle then I can toss it onto a lower off one of the others to get some rounds through it. Have a Bushnell TRS25 should be here tomorrow that will go onto my 7.62x39 AR then this one will get the scope and mount that I currently have on that one.
This is one of the Outdoorsports "blem" handguards, couldn't see any blems, but it's unlike any that I've ever used before. The barrel nut goes on then the handguard slides on over it and clamps down on the outside of the nut.
I first thought 1 ar would be fine. Then I had a nice deal for a couple lowers when I worked at a lgs so 2 came into being when I saw a really nice price for a completed upper stoner on midway, but yet I still wanted the wylde. Then your post put that within reach so I now think 3 is a good number.
ps: I used to giggle to myself when my mom had those pick up tongs like you have on the drawers. Now that I am older, them things are really handy!!!! When ever my wife or I forget our age and have the achy back, we use them.
Real estate is good. More room to mount stuff, LESS chance to inadvertently grab a HOT barrel...
