Ok y'all, I have decided to get a new rifle. I don't have a bolt gun, so time to get one. I'm seriously considering the savage axis is 6.5 creedmoor or 7-08. Any thoughts or experience? Will be a deer/semi long range gun. Leaning towards the 6.5.

Go look at all the rifle's you can and then make your choice. Come's to cartridges, I'm big on the 6.5's and 7mm both. Choose either one and select ammo right and you'll be good to go. Semi long range? What is that? Either of those will let you zero in a max point blank range at say an 8" target and let you hold dead on out to about 300yds.

Should have mentioned, if you get a rifle you don't really care for, yu'll not only not like the rifle but maybe the cartridge it's in also. Bot cartridges will be super in a rifle you like!

Got $400 currently to work with on just rifle.

As far as range, hunting to about 500 yards, punching paper out to 800 or more maybe.

Appreciate all the suggestions so far.

$400 is tight on the budget.
Maybe get the gun now and optics later. 800 yards will require a scope that will eat up most of your current budget.

On youtube there are plenty of people who put together budget friendly long range guns. One of my favorites is the Social Regressive. Watch a few of his vids to get some good info on what works, and what he regrets spending money on. (Spoiler alert - He chose the Savage)

If you want to do hunting to 500 yards, the 7mm-08 is the way to go especially if you reload as you can use heavier bullets. A 175 gr matching king at about 2500 fps will give you over 600 lbs of energy at a 1000 yards and will stay supersonic to about 1400 yards. With the heavier bullets it will have more energy at extended distances than the 6.5 and the recoil will be about the same.
My brother just bought a 7mm-08 in a Tikka.

I would pass on the Savage Axis. My son has had problems with his. I believe the other Savage models are much better. With that kind of money I would go with the Ruger American. We have 4 or them and they all work great.

I bought my so a Remington 700 in 308 and he likes his Ruger American just as much. I have 2 Nikon Prostaff scopes and I think they are the better of the low cost scopes. I have about $500 in my Ruger American and the Nikon scope. It's a lot more accurate then I am.

I'm going to disagree with Sam and George. The Axis has shown me just how amazingly accurate a cheap rifle can be. With a couple bucks spent at hardware store and a little time on the work bench the factory trigger can be tweaked and tuned to a real nice unit. I'll walk you through it if you want. The only downfall is the synthetic stock. Try and get one with wood or upgrade to a Boyd's stock (they make them for Savage).

For a budget scope I really like my Sightmark Triple Duty's from Amazon

Well after finding out a buddy had an Axis in 6.5 crdmr I went and shot it, and subsequently fell in love with the gun and round. Was going to wait a couple weeks but we happened to be at walmart and they had an Axis II in 6.5 crdmr that just wandered out to the car with me. Has the accutrigger and 22" heavy bull barrel. Managed to sweet talk $425 into the budget for gun and the bushnell scope that came on it. Put 20 rounds through it yesterday and am pleased so far.
