My friend just decided to buy an AR-15. I bought a CORE M-Lok Scout for $789 in June, and I thought it was a good deal, but now the same gun is $1100, so I don't see any particular reason to recommend it.
Here is a place that seems to have some in stock. I have never bought a complete rifle from them but many of my AR's have barrels made by them and two have complete uppers from them. https://www.bearcreekarsenal.com/rifles?stock=1
Not to sound harsh, but that's a lot like asking "what car should I buy?"
What does he plan on using it for? There are a LOT of variations to consider.
One "all purpose" gun is a lot like golfing with only one club.
You never know what you will get when you buy any gun. Maybe it will shoot stock stellar. Maybe it will shoot reload stellar. Then again, many shoot mediocre. Money doesn't necessarily guarantee a Ziva shooter. Want to know about AR's and how good they shoot, GD has a great deal of experience with ar's and their behaviors of getting those sub-moa likelyhood.
My recommendation is wait until after Trump wins re-election. If he doesn't, (win, that is) it's moot. Biden says he'll send Beto to take them from us.
I went with my son to our LGS as they had the Ruger AR on sale for $490 several years ago. It was so cheap I bought one also. I have only shot it twice but what I found is it is very accurate and no problems. My only issue is the trigger sucks. I do want to get a better one soon.
My son got me a scope for it for last Christmas and I need to get it sighted in. My son was hitting targets at 200 yards with a Walmart $26 scope with it. I haven't shot many AR's but I would recommend this one.
Many, but not all of the "modern sporting rifles" come with terrible triggers. You should leave a little extra in the budget for one of the many "drop in replacement" trigger assemblies. If you have the skill you can just buy a kit, replace certain parts and end up with a good trigger pull.
Not to change the direction of or hijack the thread but drop-in triggers was mentioned. Some advice on that - do not buy your "never heard of" drop-in trigger on eBay to try to save a buck, ask me how I know!
I put LaRue triggers in my AR's, and while they are very nice, they are definitely not target triggers. The pull is very heavy.
Rock River looks interesting. Maybe I should have bought one of their guns instead of going with a CORE. I see Rock River guarantees 1 MOA, and my CORE just will not do that. Price is about the same.
I normally buy POF or Rise Armament, both of which have about a 3.5 pound trigger, but I thought I would save a few bucks and bought two of something called "Hummingbird" for like $50 apiece! One of them has failed completely, locks up. Hoping the other one doesn't!
Hard to 'buy the wrong gun' if he's buying any AR. You don't like the caliber? Change it to another. You don't like the sights? Get a different style. Same for the stock/hand guards. Ask him what he wants (a plinker/ home defense/SHTF) what does he plan to use it for and go from there.
I pretty much have my bases covered with the AR family. I'm very old school, had one of the early M16 rifles in the service, so I bought a rifle length Sp1. I like the current M4 Carbine design, so I bought a Bushmaster M4. I needed a night-time rifle with a laser for every night use against coyotes, so I built a carbine style with an M4 length barrel, a collapsible stock and mounted a laser light on it with Anderson receivers and GI style everything else. The 5.56mm NATO will do everything I want it to do, so all 3 are that caliber.
