When releaved, I assume the weapon was unloaded, before it was put away.

My question, is how.......? Did they pull the round or was the weapon discharged, to make it safe for cleaning and storage.

Seems haveing one to however many going off every few hours at night might not lead to much sleep. But with black powder under a ball it might be the safest way.

Good question. Pulling a ball is not the easiest thing to do, and I doubt if they discharged the weapon. Probably one weapon for all three shifts ( if they used three shifts ) and then worry about it in the morning. That way they would have only one set of weapons loaded instead of all of the individual rifles. But to be honest, I don't really know.
