I have a stainless 1991A1 that I've just pulled apart for the first time in years. There was a plastic piece that fell apart when I took the slide off that was between the recoil spring and its guide. Is this just to smooth the action out someway and is it a necessity for functionality?

I figured as much but as tightly made as this pistol is it made me wonder. I'm much more used to the old WWII .45 I have with all the slop it has in it. Taking this new model apart and putting back together was an experience - especially the spring cap and barrel bushing. After about 45 minutes of sweaty frustration, chasing the spring cap across the room and cussing I finally figured out how its done.

One of the reasons that the Kimbers 1911's did not appeal to me was that they are to tight for my liking. Found that racking the slide took more effort than my own 1911's.
