Do you think a 22 rifle is an option for home defence?

A friend and I were talking about a 22 rifle for home defense. My 1st thought is that it is a bad idea. But when you think it out maybe not. Think about the Ruger 10-22. You can get a 10, 15 or 25 round mag. 10 rounds of 40 grain bullets are a total of 400 grains of lead. You can fire as fast as you pull the trigger. Makes me think it may not be such a bad idea after all.

If a .22 was all I had, I would absolutely use one.

If the .22 is your only gun....certainly use it! I don't know anyone who wants to be shot with one, and when it comes to a head, lots of people are dead because of .22's...not sure how many, but it has to be a sizable number, there are just so many .22's around...Yes, that little 10-22 can put out a lot of lead....I certainly don't want to be hit by one...

Would it be my first choice, no. But given the range I'd be shooting at in my home I could put two rounds straight through both eyes before they could blink.

My grandfather committed suicide with a .22 rifle, shot himself in the chest.

If there were no other options on the table, sure. Not my first choice, though it surely beats a stick.

A option, sure. Best option, no. A clean, lightly lubed S @W 15/22 or a Ruger 10/22 loaded with 25 CCI Velocitors in the skilled hands would likely put a wrench in a home invaders plans:eek:
Of course the rimfires are not as reliable aspect is of concern. Its been many years since I've personally experienced a failure to fire using CCI in a reasonably clean rifle, but the possibility still needs to be factored in. Not my first choice but if it's what I had it would be called on.

The rifle is not expensive, but one should not try to cheapen it up more by using cheap ammo. Use good ammo.

I have read that. If it's good enough for a hit man it's good enough for me.

Ask Bobby Kennedy if the .22 is lethal.
