I am looking to purchase an AR15 for tactical/batle rifle competition matches, and plinking. I have been given so much BS by dealers about which is best for mostly short range (100 yds and less) shooting.
What does the Brain Trust on this board think about teist rate in a 20" barrel .223?
I will most likely be using factory ammo for matches and surplus bulk stuff for plinking.
    Thanks

The 1:7 twist is the most effective for 60 grain bullets. If you plan on shooting bullets lighter than that...go with the higher twist rate. swede

The 1:9 twist should shoot almost any load, up to and including the 69gr ammo pretty well. It will certainly do better with the inexpensive 55gr ammo that is most common. If you are interested in really long distance shooting with the 80gr bullets, the 1:7 twist will be better for that.

You can also get a 1 in 8 twist, which will let you shoot at both ends of the spectrum, but will shoot the middle weight rounds better.....Zakar....
