Can anyone tell me a good place to start reloading 165gr lead rnfp with imr 4895 powder?
Reloading manuals are a must for this hobby.
You can get some bad info from places you can't verify on the net.
You'll get good info here, but manuals are better.
By the way I like IMR 3031 better for 30-30.
I got a good manual but it doesnt cover 165 grain rnfp.
Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 3rd addition doesn't list IMR 4895. For this or similar cobination.
Lyman Reloading Handbook 47th ed. does however have a load for a 170 JFP for 30-30
It lists IMR 4895 starting 24.6 grains to max 28.0 grains.
Both of these have velocity under 2000 ft/p/second. (1807 fps-1973 fps)
You should be able to load lead 165 grain with this load. Especially if it has a gas check on the base. If it doesn't you may get some leading in the barrel, but that isn't really dependent on the powder. Either way you should be ok with that.
Lee Modern Reloading Manual reprint 2001 also lists similar data.
I still like IMR 3031.
Thanks Halligan stated with 24 grains and worked up too 26.7 got 3 at 75 yards in an inch and half. think I will stay with those.
Heres some good information http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp
By the way IMR 3031 is my choice also... good luck.
