6.5mm Grendel

Starting load development for my 6.5mm Grendel. The 1st round was an arbitrary load of 18.9 grains of IMR 4198. The target should explain what happened. The next series will be 8 groups of 5 rounds each using 6.5mm Lapua Brass, Berger 130 gr Hybrid OTM Tactical Match Grade Bullets, CCI BR4 Primers and IMR 4198 powder in 8 different loads starting at (1) 18.0 grains, (2) 18.3 grains, (3) 18.6 grains, (4) 18.9 grains, (5) 19.2 grains, (6) 19.5 grains, (7) 19.8 grains and (8) 20.1 grains. The bullet seating depth will be the same for all loads. Will post those results once completed. Looking for, of course, the PetLoad. How about sending Lady Luck my way.

Very nice. Why are you shooting at 50 yards? Why not 100 or 200 yards for 6.5 Grendel?

I started at 50 yards because it is easy to zero the riflescope at that yardage. Next is 100 yards so that I can start the process of fine tuning the rifle.

Yes, LIKTOSHOOT I am on the road to find the perfect load and the perfect target pattern. Might not get there but it sure will be fun trying. And YES, I agree that the Grendel is under rated and under appreciated. Mild recoil, high BC, excellent Sectional Density, less expensive to load, brass lasts longer, on and on and on.

Looking at those holes ... You sure found zero very nicely. I don't have a 6.5 Grendel myself, but I do load for a .264 bullet; What distances are you planning to shoot with it and what rifle are you using?

Hello MPistone, the next phase will be a series of 5 cartridges to be shot in 8 different shot groups to be fired at 100 yards. Based on that series I will continue to fine tune looking for, of course, the Pet Load. Then after that it will be 200 yards but 200 yard ranges are difficult to find in San Antonio so I will cross that bridge when the time comes. Will post results as they are completed. Thank you for your interest. In the meantime I am having some fun.

Looks accurate to me, did you get any velocities? I also load for the Grendel, but never thought of using IMR 4198

The 6.5 Grendel is indeed underrated, unlike the 6.5 creedmore & more, that one is way overrated.

Hello JRK57. A lot of that has to do with the fact that 4198 was the only powder at the time I was looking. Lucked out.
Will post my 100 yard results. Be a little while. Need to load 40 rounds for next level of testing.

Hello shootbrownelk. I did look at several calibers but the Grendel growled at me so I acquiesced.

A couple weeks ago I was at a range that had targets out to 1000 yards. I was able to stretch my Grendel out to 775 yards, using some factory ammo. The scope I have on it didn’t have enough MOA elevation adjustment to reach the 1k target, but I was pretty happy with 775.

Hello JRK57. C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S ! on your 775. Tooooo bad for me; no 775 or 1K range available for me. Two hundred yards at most. But having fun never-the-less.
