at my local walmart, federal ammo is sold.

they sell 100rnd value boxes marked as 223

on rare occasion, walmart will actually get in a metal ammo can.. 420rnds, packed on strippers.. plain white label.. says federal.. 5.56x45

do they make 223 and 'milspec' 556 ? or is all the same fromt eh same line? ( same brass ? or different brass.. etc.. )

Look at the brass. If it is headstamped FC 223 Rem, then it is 223, but if it is headstamped FC 12, with a crimped primer, it's 5.56.

only reason I'm particular is because I have a 223 boltgun that's marked 223.. while other stuff states 5.56

Dont use Nato 5.56mm ammo in a 223 rem. chambers. Look for the Nato mark on the case head. Pressure is higher in the Nato ammo. Info from SAAMI > http://www.saami.org/specifications_and_information/publications/download/SAAMI_ITEM_211-Unsafe_Arms_and_Ammunition_Combinations.pdf

that's my entire point... the federal can was marked 556.. though i couldn't see the headstamps.

probably a moot point now that walmart has decided to stop selling ammo and I'll never see that can again....
