Our gun club is kicking around the idea of trying to buy reloading components as a club. No one has any experience with this and I wonder if anyone here as ever been a part of such an effort. Our goal would be to get lower prices on powder, primers, and bullets - not so much on brass.
I would be interested in hearing others experience. How much of a savings was achieved, what are the problems or hassles, good sources of supply, and any other words of wisdom.
Our club has a "store" that basically functions as group buyer. Good savings to be had that way, cost of items is usually less than can be purchased online, and splitting Hazmat fees over the group can add up pretty quick.
Have "group" bought many times- sometimes only one or two other guys but it splits the hazmat and shipping fees and saving only 12 or 15 bucks means another pound of powder or 3 or 4 hundred primers.
If you are getting a dozen or more folks together you probably will increase the jerk factor significantly if and when someone backs out or complains about perceived inequalities.
Still, all in all, a great way to shave costs on supplies.
Form a buying club, get prices and put down on paper-figuring hazmat/shpg-tell anyone involved these are the prices,if you want to go in,money UP FRONT-with receipts given. Also tell everyone-NO whiners allowed.
I haven't done a group but since 2012. I did a couple group buys with 2 friends in 2012 for powder, and primers from Graf & Sons. They had primers for $121/5k for CCI, and Titegroup for $120/8lb keg. We got together, and placed the order. Everyone paid up once we had the final cost. The HM fee, and shipping was split 3 ways, and added to our product price. Shipping was a little different since they shipped on a pallet via freight truck. Our local IDPA club does a group buy for Xtreme bullets twice a year. We are required to order 25,000 bullets to get the whole sale pricing. Shipping is figured by dividing the total shipping cost by the total shipping weight. Then multiple that by each individual orders weight. It usually plays out after shipping where you save about 18% compared to regular pricing.
Myself & a few friends and/or coworkers also do small group buys on occasion. We don't usually buy in large enough quantities to get in on any price breaks other than splitting up the cost of hazmat and shipping.
I have split with one other in the past. A group buy these days may be a tad challenging with limits not only on what's available but the quantities retailers are allowing per customer.
