I just got to thinkin' of an AR system in the 7mm-08 cartridge. I know you can buy a whole platform from Remington, DPMS, and the like, but what about building one? I believe the 7mm-08 is derived from the 308, could I use a standard 308 lower and use 7mm-08 barrel? What about magazines; should be the same principle right?

hmmmmm.

Any other info will be appreciated.

Thanks.

BulletArc47:

Why go to a not so popular cartridge like 7mm-08?

The choices in ammo and components for a basic 308 are super abundant and priced right. Any semi-auto is going to needs lots of ammo to feed it. Why paint yourself into a corner with a much more expensive caliber for ammo? You can get MIL Surp Lake City once fired good brass cheap. 308 FMJ bullet in bulk are also very inexpensive. Volume of fire is what the AR's are all about. Don't limit your shooting with a lesser cartridge than the 308.

Anyway that is my opinion based on owning a PTR-91, and a FN-FAL, both in 308. I also have a Hakim that destroys 8mm Mauser brass in one shooting and a couple of Garands in 30-06. I love them all but the PTR-91 (H&K clone) is the go-to one for accurate shooting. I picked up 1000 Lake City once fired cases for the 308. That should last me the rest of my life of shooting.

I guess novelty? I've always liked the 7mm-08 in-terms of its ballistic; and when I heard they were offering ARs in that cartridge, I began wondering if was possible to build one.

I get these different AR build ideas in my head; like an itch you can't quite scratch. Its the idea of a 7mm-08 AR; not a very common sight you know?

I know the 308 is a cheaper choice, and it would be easier to build an AR for that cartridge too.

So the real reason: it's different. Just something that would say, 'Look what I've got!" at the range or to my friends.

For what its worth, I also started thinking of a semiautomatic chambered for 45 Colt; just a glimpse of what crazy thoughts reside in my brain-space. :p

I guess we all get-off on different things! I'm more practical, I guess, and would much prefer a 308 AR. But since I already have the excellent PTR and FN-FAL, I see no reason to own an AR other than the 223 Varmint that I also have.

An AR build is fun (I have done a few). So have fun.

There are several options for a ar style 7mm-08. I am just boarding my flight, will post more later. I am going to be building 1 in February or I may just opt for the Rem R-25.

No Kidding. I like the 7mm-08 but I'm with LD not a real cost effective round for fast fire. Even reloading 7mm bullets are about twice the cost of .308
