I tried this on the military forum with only one response, so I thought I'd give you guys a try.

My son has this bayonet and he was wondering what kind of rifle that it came offen. It has some French writing on the back of the blade and winds up with the date of 1879. It looks to be about 2 feet long and the scabbord has a little rectangular loop, perhaps to attach the scadbord to something? Do any of you fellas have any ideas? Any idea what it's worth? Thanks, I have included URLs of some pictures that I took.

It looks like a French Model 1874 "Gras" Epee bayonet, from the looks of the picture / condition, probably about $70 to $80 retail value.

One of the sites below should be a great reference for your bayo.

Thanks, I accessed the web sites you provided and it does indeed seem to be the "Gras" bayonet.

Now does anyone know where I might find a rifle that fits it?

omega252 you sir are going to fit in here just fine!

Correct procedure = Acquire ammo, sling, mag, bayonet, cleaning kit, oil bottle or something...

Then explain to wife that you must have the rifle to fit it!

I will look for you, but off hand I don't where any are. Usually the're found in the corner of pawn or gun shop, with owner not knowing what the ugly a$$ thing is!

Here is a link so that you can spot one when you see it.
