Poor Beirut. They have been climbing out from under the wars over the last couple of decades and now this. Prayers that whoever perpetrated this will be caught rapidly and dealt with ruthlessly.

I saw that earlier. Some ninny was speculating that it was "highly explosive" sodium nitrate; apparently he's never tried to make sodium nitrate explode. I did for years as a child, but it's just no good, nothing like its meaner sister, potassium nitrate.

Yeah, that is one huge explosion. Amazing if only 70 are dead.

Perhaps they could only find parts for 70...blasts really do awesome things to soft tissue. Then it's early, maybe a few cars are buried under debris, or being a port facility, out in the water. I spent a LOT of time in and out of Beirut during my five (5) Med cruises in the 60's , got familiar with the port by being a Beach Guard for arriving and departing liberty parties, even toured the local hoosegow! There were some really good Bistros around..Flew in and out of there numerous times with PanAm also.

Last time there was when the Phoenicia Hotel (owned by PanAm) was the target for a rocket attack...spent the night in the bar (under the swimming pool) after the first rockets hit above my room..haven't been back

Never ceases to amaze me that upon noticing an earth-shattering explosion in the distance people OOH! and AHH! as they stand behind a plate glass window taking cell-phone pictures of the event. Some seconds later the shock wave arrives and pulverizes the glass. Watched a similar event (with same gawker reaction) as a munitions storage/supply facility went up in (I believe) China not too long ago.

I was reading some comments on a You Tube vide of the blast. A guy there stated that his windows broke 5 miles from the blast and his friends windows broke 15 miles from the blast.

An early report I read claimed the building was some sort of Fireworks Factory, But looking for that article a few minutes ago I can no longer find that report.

Explosion rocks city ahead of Hariri verdict in a trial for the killing of ex-PM Rafik Hariri in 2005, by members of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group.

    Starting to makes sense now...?

If you look at the lower building on the right you'll notice flames as well as multiple sporadic white flashes throughout the structure. Moments later the blast obliterates that building and the taller one to the left.

That's what I heard, and the blast was felt clear across in Cyprus. It registered as a 3.3 earthquake.

The Ammonium Nitrate was supposedly from a ship that had been impounded years ago. If someone knew about it, it was an attack waiting to happen.

The blast has destroyed the port, which is the entry point for food supplies for Lebanon. BBC reported over 100 dead and climbing, and the hospitals can't cope with the injured. Lebanon was getting ready to lock down because of the China crud, and the streets were crowded with people getting lock down supplies.
