What would be the best self defense for an individual of fair complexion at midnight in a section of north St. Louis where nine out of ten houses are boarded up crack houses, the tenth house has bars on the windows (those are the ones lived in by real people) and all of the folks in the neighborhood are of dark complexion. A: Don't get in that situation to begin with, as in avoid the area altogether.
B: Depending on how serious you are in this example, if you personally feel your life is in danger and there is no other form of escape ... nowhere to retreat ... exit the vehicle and give clear verbal warning that you have no interest in thier presence and or assistance, if things progress ... shoot one of the 15, this should certainly get the point across. More often than not, seeing the result of confrontation between co-thugs and defeat, the others will disband.

What do you have under the seat, a tire tool? A jack? A couple of flares? Maybe a big screwdriver, or a 1/2" drive ratchet? A Destroyer in 9 Largo?
Except for the latter, I always had most of these under the seat of my trucks, usually along with a broken sledge hammer handle that I never throw away when I break.
Improvised weaponry can be highly effective, and sometimes all you have to do is LOOK like you know what you are doing to "redirect the mob."
Just don't let them know your pants are wet or full.
I had a friend once who was an ex-Hells Angel,
who had a knack for getting into and out of bar fights. He always said no matter what you do, you find the "leader" of the mob, the loudest mouth, and make him know no matter WHAT happens, he is going down with you. If you can make that one guy flinch or back down, you USUALLY have it licked. But sometimes you just get hurt...
(He was REAL good with a long neck beer bottle, never was without one that was half full in a bar...while I never managed anything but a bruised hand when I try it, HE could make that bottom bust off neatly by smacking the top really hard with his open palm, hydraulic pressure or something. It was impressive, in less than a second he had it at your throat. EVERYBODY backed down and got civil when they saw him do that that...)
He taught me how to use a flat sap too...
BUT, Mathew is right. What the HELL were you doing there at that time anyway? Avoidance is the BEST method of dealing with any kind of trouble.

Welp, I don't know what to add to this, I really don't. So I'll just go over the finer points.
1) Have a gun
2) Don't be in that situation(interchangable with #1)
3) Shoot or stomp the crap out of the loudest person first, they seem to always be the leader(also identified by having his pants lower below his asscrack than anyone else)
4) Look for an escape, he who fights and runs away lives to fight another day.
5) Drive a Ford instead of a Chevy and you won't have to worry about your car breaking down
Remember: It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye, then it's just fun!

Thanks folks - this was just a hypothetical situation. I do work in a field where I am occasionally called out at odd hours for environmental responses on hazardous materials spills. And, often times, they are in bad parts of town because some hood knocked a valve off a tank or something. In those cases, there is a handy 12 gauge Mossberg with 9rd tube, and a S&W 4006 riding in the truck, and a PA63 380ACP secured in an inside the pants holster.
This boy may be crazy, but he ain't stupid.

Responding to a "valve knocked off a tank," I think I'd leave the tracers at home...
BTW, MO doesn't have a CCW does it?
Years ago I owned an "illegal" (in NY) early Detonics that I wish I still owned. It rode in the pouch of the seat cover under the seat of my truck.
I wish I still had it, even if it was unreliable with hardball. BUT once I needed it, I believe it saved me and a manager on a night bank deposit from serious harm just by showing it, but I would have been in more trouble than the two drunks who were accosting us.
After they turned away we ran.
I'm glad I now live in a state that allows concealed carry with a permit.

Can't carry concealed in Missouri - but it can be riding in the wide open sitting on your passenger seat, or hang the holster on your rearview mirror in plain site. I did that on several occasions so that I could easily reach in the truck and grab it. The local police have no qualms about it either - they know we are out there putting our lives on the line to save some company's assets.

Hmm. "An armed society is a polite society," so I'd assume they're armed and be very polite to them. I'll bet more than one of the "crackheads" has enough hotwiring experience to figure out what's wrong with the truck.
Might sound a little naive, coming from a country boy, but I used to live in San Diego, and I know people, crackheads or not, just want a bit of respect.

Someone mentioned being sure of yourself...I think that goes a long way, I've been in a lot of outnumbered confrontations, and bluffed my way out of most of them, but being prepared for the situation (which is what you are doing) is just plain smart...I think having a two way radio would be adventagous...I know my twin brother could get out of bed at 2:00am and be anywhere in this town in four minutes for me. My wife could do the same if I just wanted a ride, she's a pretty good shot too, come to think about it...I'd also say, draw attention to yourself, the thugs already know you are there, so make sure the rest of the neighborhood does...slap a strobe light on the top of the truck, and walk around it playing like you are talking on the hand held radio untill help arrives.
I love the way my Colt .45 rides between my belt and my butt.
Yea, crackheads just want your respect, and your pocket money, and your gold watch....Sorry, I know some crackheads too, my cousin is one of them...sitting on death row right now for murder...murdered a girl while he was high. They may want my respect, but they can keep on wanting, I respect 'em about as much as I trust 'em.

BOB-
this thread of what if's you started definatly makes me think, and maybe im showing my fuzzy lily white rear end alittle bit here and getting into a conversation where im not wanted and am desperately over my head, but i have one question/ concern.
just for arguements sake, god forbid, anything ever did happen that would require any of us to put our insurance policies into use, but say that you did actually encounter 15 crackheads passin the pipe in front of your broke down truck. i noticed that you state that you carry 3 weapons with you, and while im all in favor of superior firepower, 3 weapons should Mr. Murphy decide to step in and say hello, well isnt it concevable that you may become distanced from atleast one of your weapons? just because they are crackheads, or whatever possible type you may encounter, does not make them automatically an unarmed rabble. should you come under fire outside of your truck, while trying to get your vehicle mobil again, and had to seek cover , couldnt get back into your cab for some reason, then you may have just lost a 9 round mossberg and handed potential supperiority over to the heads. theres ALOT of possibles that could happen, and alot of id simply do this or do this, but i tend to agree with most, your best chance is to not get into that situation if at all possible, DO NOT get out of your ride unless ABSOLUTLY neccessary, so as to not lose control over your own safety and well being even more, and maybe revamp your rolling arsenal alittle bit?? the world and its possibilites are so immense that there are more possibles than solutions, so all any of us can do is plan for the worst and hope for the best. BUT it would definatly be a major disadvantage to lose control of a critical peice of hardware like a 9 round 12 guage. just my thoughts trying to put myself in that position mentally for a few minutes. i cant say my solution for a auto insurance policy is any better or any worse, but i feel that with a Colt Combat Target or a Glock 21 and 4 or 5 loaded spare mags, im pretty much able to handle most things, and can more readily retain control of my weapon by it only being one primary, and a possible back up, back up for me if i feel i need a weapon to begin with, is a ruger sp101 and a couple speed loaders, spare mags can be carried out of site in a modified day planner, and no one is the wiser. your thread is definate food for though, and ill be trying to find a suitable solution to it for myself. just thought id voice a concern.. hope you all dont mind, and if you do, ill keep my mouth shut next time =) Ray in California

Ray:
No one will mind you "jumping in" here...Thats what it's all about... and, I feel you have added thought, and content to an otherwise dying thread. Furthermore, I have to agree with you to some extent, I believe, (as stated in my above post) that some of that firepower could be replaced with some sort of mobile communications device...fear on the unknown could definitely work in your favor here (they dont know who you are communicating with, how many there are, or how soon they could arrive).
I also agree in having sufficient ammo ready for that piece...For example my Smith & Wesson 9mm sports two factory mags and three hi-cap mags...My Colt .45...five mags, with more to come.
[edit]half my post didn't post for whatever reason...that really pisses me off[edit]
I dont feel like re-posting everything I said, at the moment,
But, I did mention, that I agree with who ever said "just brandishing a weapon may go a long way" I recall back when I was just an 18 yr old punk kid, three blacks jumped on me, it was dark, and they were pretty serious about hurting me (another story in it's self), but I pulled a heafty knife and started acting crazy, and these boys couldn't run away fast enough, who's to say 15 crackheads wouldn't do the same after putting a few .45 acp's in the air, we cant know.
With all that said...I still wouldn't mind having Grandpappy (my old scattergun) behind the seat.

Re: Best Defense in Gang Land

i whole heartedly agree with Crpdeth that some sort of a mobile communications system is invaluable in a situation like that, correct me if i am wrong, but i believe, atleast in California that you can dial 911 from ANY cell phone, whether its hooked up or not and get the 911 dispatcher to be put thru to local state or county police or emergency crews. personally, i think id reserve putting a few rounds in the air for a last resort, and i think id try to put a few into the ground before the went into the air, providing that said ground could be some dirt or grass, or even a planter box. every year after the 4rth of july the news is always full of stories about a stray bullet someone shot into the air coming down and hitting an innocent, or almost hitting someone, doing property damage, ect. i myself would hate to find out later that an errant round that I fired, unintentionally punched thru the ceiling of someones dwelling and hit an innocent, not to mention the legalities involved with that reckless discharge??? hind sight is ALWAYS 20/20 , but stray rounds are a favorite of the antigunner, and for good reason, they are in excusable, we are ALL responsible for our weapons, ammo, and accessories, and ANY damage that they may do, purposly or inzadvertantly. i think that as i previously said, if a warning shot HAD to be fired, put it into something semi solid, potential risk of a riquochete but atleast you have some idea that you wont be allowing gravity to redirectthings somewhere you cant see. and another thought.. 15 crackheads... one of you... i remember hearing somewhere and i dont know if there is any validity to this or not, check for yourselves, but isnt there a ballpark set number of oponents, combined with their actions and demenor/disposition that entitles you to reasonably dispense leathal force? if i had to fire my weapon in that situation, and gave CLEAR,LOUD verbal warning, ie YELLED at them "get the f*&k away from me, I am in fear of my life and well being, and i WILL use deadly force, I WILL SHOOT YOU!!!" and they still advanced , calling me on my words, atleast then i would have established some sort of a ground work for a defense in court. Also i believe that for legal and liability reasons, you must also make sure that you HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE open to you, no where to run, and your escape is blocked by hostiles, too much to think about, but them legalities and lawyers can twist anything into around. what do you all think?? Move.
Either:
(1) move your residence to keep from being in that situation, or (2) move FAST (run, drive, etc.) to get out of it.
A fair-skinned person would have to be devoid of any sense of self-preservation to even speak the words "East St. Louis" above a whisper...
Folks, regardless of what you may say, regardless of what you may or may not have/possess, one does NOT have to remain in an enviroment like that. Moving ain't free--there is always a cost both in money and emotionally to changing one's life, life style, place of residence, and occupation too, if need be. However, the good life IS AVAILABLE to those who are willing to pony up and do those things necessary to obtain it.
One can have mountains, pure water, clean snow, and good, caring, peaceful neighbors, or whatever it is that you desire. BUT you have got to want it more than you want other things...

Hmmm...well I am considered to live in a fairliy rough neighborhood. I live in the San Fernando Valley and we have our share of local gangs and parts of the bigger gangs from the greater Los Angeles area trickle up to us. A majority of thugs have moved up in the caliber scale within the past 5 years. From the small but deadly .22(which is still used) has now grown to the fierce .45 or the occasional .357 magnum(they're gettin smarter). If you hide behind a trash can, house door or car door they wanna make sure the round goes through it. We do get the usual AK-47 or other assault rifle hit now and then too. But to answer your hypothetical situation...I'd want to have a good ol' scattergun loaded with 00 buck and maybe a slug or two and a hi cap pistola at my disposal.

Ever think about modifing your Mossberg with a Knoxx magazine convertion?
It allows quick reloads with 6 round mags or 10 round drums.
6+1 or 10+1(quick reloads) = No BGs

With all that said...I still wouldn't mind having Grandpappy (my old scattergun) behind the seat.

i whole heartedly agree with Crpdeth that some sort of a mobile communications system is invaluable in a situation like that, correct me if i am wrong, but i believe, atleast in California that you can dial 911 from ANY cell phone, whether its hooked up or not and get the 911 dispatcher to be put thru to local state or county police or emergency crews. personally, i think id reserve putting a few rounds in the air for a last resort, and i think id try to put a few into the ground before the went into the air, providing that said ground could be some dirt or grass, or even a planter box. every year after the 4rth of july the news is always full of stories about a stray bullet someone shot into the air coming down and hitting an innocent, or almost hitting someone, doing property damage, ect. i myself would hate to find out later that an errant round that I fired, unintentionally punched thru the ceiling of someones dwelling and hit an innocent, not to mention the legalities involved with that reckless discharge??? hind sight is ALWAYS 20/20 , but stray rounds are a favorite of the antigunner, and for good reason, they are in excusable, we are ALL responsible for our weapons, ammo, and accessories, and ANY damage that they may do, purposly or inzadvertantly. i think that as i previously said, if a warning shot HAD to be fired, put it into something semi solid, potential risk of a riquochete but atleast you have some idea that you wont be allowing gravity to redirectthings somewhere you cant see. and another thought..
East St Louis??? AAAaaagggghhhh!!!

A balanced equation!

Hello, Sara Brady here. Just call 911.
The fight for freedom is not fought overseas in distant lands with guns, missles and bombs. It is fought here with words, pen and paper and I fear, we are loosing it.
