I was at a shop this am getting my ar fixed, and noticed some empties on a desk..

brass base and about oh.. 3/8" of case ( maybee they were steel? ) anyway.. rest of case up past the shoulder and to case mouth ( like over 3/4 of the case..e tc.. ) was a red hard plastic.

reminde dme of a 410 shotshell that had been necked down almost.. :)

anyone ever see this?

all this talk of pressures and whatnot and bad cases.. you'd think plastic would not handle it well .. at least on extraction.. etc?

The first editions of these came out in either the late eighties or early nineties. The rason was to lessen the cost of producing the ammo because of the cost of brass back then, and to make them lighter so troops could carry more of it. The brass base was to have a place to seat the primer and to have positive extraction like a normal case. The plastic fore case was to hold the powder and seat the bullet and to provide a place to head space the cartridge on. The two pieces were threaded together, I don't recall which was male and which was female threaded, but it doesn't really matter because back then it was an abysmal failure. I never heard of the military trying this in 2006, but they were for a time looking at going to caseless ammo. This had the propellant shaped to resemble a cartrige case for head space purposes, with the projectile attached to the front and a consumable primer at the rear. This also didn't work as expected
