other than length what is the diffrences beween 45lc, 454 casuel, 45-70 and 45-90?

I have been told you can trim 45-70 down for 45lc but its walls are too weak for 454's. and 45-90 is good to trim down for 454's but its walls are too thick for 45lc.

so whats the story here?

also read some where that you can shoot 454's in a 460 magnum pistol?

and was told you can shoot 410 shotshells (buckshot and slugs also) in a 45-70 but not a 45-90???

not sure, but seems theres some bull some where in the above...can I draw upon the people here to separate fact from fiction and give me the true "skinny"??

454 and 45 Colt are the same, exteriorly. except for length. I've been told that 454 has a thicker web, but have never cut one to see.

As you can see, there ain't no way on earth that 45 Colt will work in a 45/70 or 90. A 480 case in a 505 hole? Case will rupture. That's assuming that the extremely small rim would even hold it to the chamber. And then you send that 452 bullet down that 458 barrel, bouncing around. Accuracy would suck big time.

Oh, and it looks to me like the 460 is just a 454 stretched some more. In that case, 45 Colt and 454 Casull can both be shot in one.

I've heard that you can shoot a 410 in a 45/70. But, again, a 410 has only got a 525 rim. It's bigger than a 45 Colt, but still much smaller than that 608 45/70 rim. The story I heard (and it makes a good story, even if it AIN'T true) is that 410 was issued to troopers, out west, to use in their 45/70 trapdoors, for hunting. I disbelieve it, but like I said, it's a good story. Shooting that shot charge down a rifled barrel would make a really crappy pattern. And it the days before plastic shotcups, it would really lead the barrel.

But if you COULD shoot 410 in a 45/70, then it would certainly work in a 45/90. 'Cause, like I said, the only difference is the length. That would be like saying you could shoot 38 shot loads in a 38 special, but NOT in a 357. See how dumb that statement would be?

I just reread your question. You weren't asking about shooting 45 Colt in a 45/70, you were asking about cutting 45/70 brass down for 45 Colt.

That won't work either, as the entire 45/70 case is just too damn big. Rim is too big. Web is too big. Case body is too big. Won't work.
