I got a ticket Saturday for 73 in a 50. My son says don't pay it, contact a lawyer. So my questions are why do I need a lawyer? What do I get if I hire a lawyer? I emailed a local attorney and they want a $100 consult fee, plus costs to represent me in court, plus the cost of the ticket! Do I really need to spend three times the cost of the ticket? I know there are ticket attorneys out there that work with truck drivers all the time, and I don't think they charge anywhere near what the lawyer I contacted charges.

My son says that if I just pay the fine, it will affect my credit score, and cause my ins. to go up. Plus some other things.

Tickets DO AFFECT your credit score

most states you'll start getting a ton of postcards form attorneys that want to help you before its time to pay the ticket or extend for court etc

I been told (ain't had a ticket of any kind in more than 30 years, so don't know for absolutely sure) that if you plead guilty, and take the safety course, that gets you a lesser fine, no points, and your insurance don't go up.

And I'm in Florida, not Texas, so they might do things different.

Depending on where you live 20MPH over the limit is speeding and reckless driving.
If you had a child in the car it is also endangering the life of a child which is an immediate revocation of your license.

If you have any points on your record, even just the first 2 charges could be enough to lose your license.

I've retained lawyers twice to fight speeding tickets. All is got me was the opportunity to spend $1,000. Pay it.
I don't know how a speeding ticket would affect your credit score.

Wife recently got a ticket for 11 over. She was able to take an online driving course and the ticket was dropped. Check with the court clerk at the office of the ticketing agency and see if you can do the same. Course cost the same as the ticket but no insurance penalty, etc. This was in Texas.

Cant speak for Tx, but in NC, I got my only speeding ticket dropped to "improper equipment" and that is no points and not reported to insurance. I just got my speedometer calibrated and took that to the ADA. Cost me about $300 all told.

Got a ticket for 80 in a 65. $285.00. My credit score is 836 the last time I checked.
Insurance rates havn't changed. Traffic School cost more than the fine and that's not counting the wasted time.
Cut them a check and be done with it!! The last ticket I got was in 1960 so it was easier to write the check than deal with the BS. From now on I use the Cruise Control.:)
