Are they full of meat this year?

Yup. One we caught had 15 ounces of meat in it. It was YUGE !
Will be in Winchester Bay next month for a week and hope to get out and catch a few more. In WA, the limit is 5 a day per person and you can only crab 5 days a week, In OR the limit is 15 a day per person

We were on the old Coast Guard dock in Winchester Bay catching crabs and there was a couple of Japanese tourists there trying their luck crabbing. We heard one of them saying no not Oregon crab and they would toss it back in the water. They were taking the crab measure and the crab was bigger than the measure. We explained to them bigger than the measure was good smaller was bad.

 

That’s some good eatin’ right there Don. Many a time I’ve put out around Mukilteo (Everett) and dropped crab traps then spent the day hauling in a nice catch of Blackmouth. Lemme tell ya those were some good dinners of Dungeness and Salmon.

 

My wife caught 15 yesterday off our deck. She makes West Indies salad with them.

 

I love me some crab, I used to go crabbing at Roll Over Pass near Boliver, Texas, just east of Galveston. We caught them on ferry road near the Texas Monument too.
Those were the days, I need to do that again.

Here I am helping some friends a few years back. They're PEI fishermen that head out for rock crabs in the fall. I've read that rock crabs in the Gulf of St. Lawrence are related to stone crabs down in Florida. I know for certain that they're very tasty!

 

 

I lived in Chesapeake va for a while in the 70s. Blue crabs are some of the best eating to be found anywhere.

 

Years ago while in the military and assigned to Andrews AFB, one of my fellow junior officers suggested a crab fest at his base housing. I was assigned the job of buying a bushel of blues fresh from the bay. I remember to this day, a yard full of friends, large potato chip tins for boiling the crabs. a couple of garden hoses hanging over tree branches for washing your hands and face as needed (which was often).

Here in Oregon the red rock crabs have no size limit but they sure do have big claws with lots of meat in them.

 

Every once in awhile we get a red large enough to eat. I actually like them better than dungeness as the meat is sweeter. They are mean little devels

 

Yep they are indeed better tasting and meaner and pinch harder than Dungeness and the small ones aren't worth messing with.

 

I need to go down the coast and put out a couple of traps. I love lobster but I think I prefer crab a lot more, especially blue crab.

 

Man they look good. All we catch are blue claws. This year has been the best in probably 30 years on the east coast. Lots of crabs and tons of meat in them.

 

Since I moved to Colorado, I haven't had a single low country boil.

Tell me you're gonna have one with them fresh crabs. Please!

 

Last boil we had was for crawfish, that was pretty awesome too. Anything done with friends and family is always awesome.

 

This was a few years ago. I don’t have any recent pictures. 48 blue crabs caught with a chicken leg tied to a string.

 

We were too cheap (or was it poor) to buy drumsticks. We bought the necks and uses the string method!
