Nice deer firedog! I'm still deerless. Tried going out later in the day today to break the insanity theory of doing the same thing and expecting different results. We have been going out at 6:15 in the morning and staying till 8:30. so i decided to try a mid morning early afternoon hunt, but i got the same results. I must be insane.:(

GRINDER

I'm going to try it this year. The 32-40 seems like a good candidate. A manual meat grinder will be needed if I do. I'm done paying processors.

one unantlered deer may be taken per day in addition to one antlered buck per day.
I love the "one per day" part. I would NEVER buy beef if I lived in Bama. Since I abhor Nick Saban, that would not be possible!!

But I can not move east, I will only leave Texas to go further west, well north and west to either the rolling plains or foothills of the Rockies. Alas, I would then need to find a new wife, cuz she said she ain't moving further from family. And we all know how panful that would be!!:D

We had a great morning for deer hunting this morning. Perfect conditions. Told my wife to heat up the frying pan cause i'll be bringing home some venison. I even brought some extra ammo in case i had to shoot my way out. Yesterday was a nasty windy day with snow showers. I froze out there, but today no wind nice sunrise no moon last night. So told my hunting partner we would limit out this morning, of course like the last 20 times out this season neither of us saw a deer, or even a squirrel.:( Moss is really staring to grow on the North side of my hunting clothes.:( My wife didn't even bother to heat up the frying pan she knew better. All i got was a bowl of cereal.

Ive been away too long. But deer season has gone well.

The old Remington Model 81 in 35 Rem put the smack down on this one, and the munchkin helped me process it. 20 minutes after this doe went down, I had a buck come sauntering in and took what I felt was a nice shot on him. He dropped where he stood. Then, the goats went and tried to fight it and it ran off. Puddles of blood where he laid down, then nothing. I was pretty bummed to lose a deer.

This saturday I was sitting on the family farm in a stand I rarely hunt, but usually produces deer. Got busted right at sunset, so I decided to take a chance and try to flank the deer to the field I knew they would go to. Well, it worked and there in the field stood 10 or so deer milling about, with 3 minutes left of legal light. Picked to best looking doe and sent it with the 6.5CM. When the gun settled, there was still a deer standing where I shot, so I chambered another round and sent it. Come to find out, the first deer had fell where she stood, but I couldnt see her so I shot the second thinking it was the first. Got plenty of meat in the freezer now!

I did not get to go hunting this year, but the group of guys I go with and my brothers did well and I did even better. I got 40 pounds of venison tenderloins, back straps, sausage and hamburger meat, thanks to all my friends. Kind of like this a lot. Did not have to field dress, or butcher. Everything was nicely packaged and vacuum sealed, I could get used to this.

I only got a doe this year ... missed a nice buck. We butchered 6 deer in total. The last hind quarter I deboned and cured it for venison ham. Never tried that before ... wet cured it for about 12 days and then smoked it till an internal temp of 150. Oh man was that good. I should have gone out in the late season and killed another ... still have a little time on the calendar, but not in my daytimer ... ugh! If nothing else, next year will be more venison ham!

I only went out three times this year. Maybe an hour and half each time. Got one spike on the second trip and put in canning jars with some taters and carrots (48quarts). The last time was mainly to get out the house and stretch my legs and I was kinda glad I didn't have to put up another 48 quarts of stew. I may still make another 7 quarts out of one of the back straps though. Opening a jar and eating 10mins later is pretty handy and its not chocked full of whatever the food factory decided to put in it - just plane good and good for you.

Well when deer season goes out and the weather is still cool it's a good time to pig hunt for those with feral hogs close by. I've been talking about doing that for a few years now but still haven't gone. Kinda like fishing - I day dream about it for a good while and by the time I get around to going I'm already too tired of it to go 😂.

There used to be some ferals close by but I think they all got cleaned out 25/30 years ago. That puts a damper on it but it's still nice to think about going and shooting a disorderly boar hog coming at you poping its tusk and foaming at the mouth. 😵

Thats so true!
Our Mule deer hang over the Snake River Breaks and eat cheat grass, sage brush and whatever nasty vegetation they can scrounge up. While the whitetails dine from the fields of Peas, beans and wheat.
weird.
Mule deer in AZ will eat prickly pear. And dig 2' down to find water on dry stream beds. Wife was disappointed I got a mule tag there because she remembered the sagebrush taste from Idaho mule deer.

Same here. I have had the same luck so far but hopefully that changes soon.
