I have what I think is an MK4 British Rifle The only marking on the gun is is this MK406420 on the left side of the gun. It has a small release button just ahead of the trigger for the clip and the wood section above the barrel has 4 bar horrizontal line pattern in the wood. I'd like to know more about this gun. when was it made. What campain it might have been used in?

Thanks for your help Bob Harrison

It sounds lilke a Rifle No. 4 (not Mark 4), but I can't tell more without some good pictures. The No. 4 was the standard British rifle in WWII and was used by British and Commonwealth forces from about 1942 on. It was intended to supercede the old Rifle No. 1 Mk III (the SMLE) but in the event both rifles served throughout the war.
