I have heard shots come my direction on more than one occasion. but either no one was shooting at me or they couldn't aim. The shots were at the tree tops in my direction but not in line with me. I have had guns pulled on me but not shot and I've met people that answer the door with a gun in their hand. I love old school people doesn't bother me a bit. I have shot warning shots near anyone that blatantly trespasses on my property. On one occasion I escorted someone off my property with a 38 in there back. Oh and as a kid I shot my best friend in the ass with a bb from a hundred yards away because he said I couldn't do it. The only time I really felt the need to be armed somewhere was in tampa florida. I heard gun shots way to close on a regular basis. In the country I would of thought nothing of it but in the city I knew it wasn't target practice or hunting. Not in a traditional way anyhow.

My stupid buddy across the street ran into MY house, got MY BB gun and shot the COP'S kid. 😱

Oh jeez, not long til the cops came.
Only thing that let me keep my BB gun was that my buddy ADMITTED going into my house to get the gun.

whew.

There are many extenuating problems with this.
1. Being geographically challenged is a BIG one. Living in the Peoples Republic of Illinois anywhere near Chiraq or the North Shore toward Milwaukee is problematic. Shootings around here is all but a spectator sport and simply weekend recreation. Gunfire is a regular thing. WHY, you ask because Illinois and especially Chicago has the strictest anti-gun laws anywhere. (see video below taken one evening at the intersection by my home) won't allow a download sorry.
( The video shows "drive by" full auto machine gun fire. just 60 feet from my front yard )
2. Does service in Vietnam or anywhere shots are fired in actual battle?
3. Hunting accidents..... yes I have had occasion to be shot at by some numb-skull that shoots at anything that moves even if the person is wearing required reflective clothing! Then only yelled "sorry" and disappeared. Night hunters and illegal shooting from a road and poaching can get lead flying.
4. Idiots abound in almost any situation where guns are concerned. Does having a firearm in your hand some make some loose all reason??
5. First and foremost.. Getting shot tends to ruin your whole day! It is an instant and permanent reminder NOT to do that again!
I have been shot. twice at different times by an enemy assailant. Needless to say, either one did not improve my overall good nature! A thing to consider, getting stabbed is somehow infinitely WORSE and hurts like all get out!
AVOID it ALL costs!

A bunch of times. Of course most were in RVN and Laos. Stateside a few when I was a teenager. My best friend and I used to jackrabbit hunt in California up near Mojave/Lancaster. We hunted about 50 feet apart and a jack jumped up in front of us, but turned back towards us and ran between us. I watched as my friend aimed and concentrated on the jack. He fired just as the jack passed between us. He was using a Stevens 12 gage single barrel and #4 shot. The shot ricoched off the grount and hit me in the chest and face.

Lucky for me it was cold and I was wearing an old Army surplus field jacket. That kept the shot out of my chest, but a few pellets nicked my face. I wore glasses at the time and one of the spent pellets hit one of the lenses but didn't break it. Scared the crap out of both of us. Especially him when he saw blood on my face.

Another time while we were hunting, a car load of fools stopped on a dirt road in the same area and started taking pot shots at us with .22s. The car radio blared Mexican music and they were obviosly drinking. Again we had shotguns and they were about 150 yards off. We just ducked down into a shallow gully and got out of sight and got away.

Last was when I was about 17. I used to go camping in a place called Piutte Mountain. Really neat place - a green pine covered mountain on the northern edge of the Mojave desert. My best friend and a friend of his came along. We set up camp near an abandond saw mill. My two buddies took off for a walk and I continued setting up our camp. When I finished, I walked around checking out the old rusty saw mill remains. Someone with a high powered rifle began to shoot at me from the woods about 100 yards off. At first I thought they were accidental shots, so I yelled and moved to cover. They continued to fire, so I returned fired with my pistol - a French military service pistol. Whoever it was decided it was best to leave me alone when I began to shoot back. Shortly afterwards my buddies came back to camp from the opposite direction of the shooter and asked what all of the firing was about. The rest of that trip we were all spooked pretty good.

Guess I've had my share of lead headed in my direstion...

I was in a bar in Joliet IL. A Southwest suburb of Chicago. They had just thrown a few biker club guys out an hour before. A white van drove by. The sliding door opened and several guys opened up with shotguns. Some of the guys in the bar were armed and started to return fire. A few minutes later after the shooting several of the guys in the bar were hit. I don't know about the van. I got out of there before the cops and EMTs got there. Back in the mid-1970s if you were looking for trouble you were in the right place.

Had three big fellas in Westwego La block the road once. One held some little auto at his side while giving me a menacing look. My buddy Doug was with me. We had spent the last couple weeks tweaking and shooting our 1911s, his Government model mine Combat Commander. We had gone to a company meeting and had brought them to show a couple guys.
When these guys blocked the way down the street, bad road bad neighborhood, potholes slow going, I looked at Doug and he just grinned. Doug is the best shot I’ve known, used to compete in Southern Cal with his speed six against predominantly Colt revolver guys. They called his Ruger the snake killer. Anyway when we looked back they just kinda melted away. Guess they decided they had better things to do than mess with a couple skinny west coast boys.
No shot fired I’m glad to report. Closest I’ve come.

I've had a gun pulled on me 5 times and twice fired at. (And I'm not even in the military or a cop!) 3 of those instances involved the perp drinking too much.

Wrong place at the wrong time. Just dumb luck.

Short story, readers digest version:

1972: A 9 year old took a pot shot with a 22 rifle (he was pissed off) at me on a schwinn bike out near our farm. I was 11 years old. He hit the frame, fortunately my calf was in the upstroke.

1976: A drunk with a hunting rifle waved an loaded M1 Garand at a bunch of us under-aged teens drinking beer at the beach in Forest Lake MN after one of us told him not to drive that drunk after he came out of a bar (Cops came, he ditched the gun in the truck, they pulled it out without a search warrant, arrested him, he was wanted in WI for aggravated assault with a weapon)

1977: A girl I was dating had an ex-BF that jumped me in an alley way near the Tom Thumb (7-11 of the 70-s') and his buddy held a shotgun on me while he beat the crap out of me for dating "his girl". I was a rather muscular guy, they needed a gun. ;)

1982: Bartending at Garcia's of Scottsale in Federal Way, a customer pointed his conceal carry firearm at me after I cut him off. He left immediately when I picked up the phone to call the cops from behind the bar.

1984: After work, 3 waitresses and I went to catch last call at the Keg Restaurant. Later when leaving in the parking lot, a guy fired 2 shots at me after I told him he should go "Sleep it off" when he was inside the bar, belligerent and drunk. He wanted to show me that I was wrong for his harassment of every customer in the bar, and after the bar closed in the parking lot from his car, he shot from about 10 feet away. He drove off, no one got a license plate number.
I sounds like booze played a roll in a bunch of those.

Pulled on to a oil lease in the boondocks and saw 2 people 50 yards or so out in the pasture with shotguns hunting . As I am starting to circle the location to set up to load a rabbit takes off running in the pasture between me and them and they fired . Guessing the pellets hit the ground and ricochet up toward me . I had the window down and got peppered on my arm and shoulder by a few pellets that left red marks for about a week and heard pellets hit side of the truck . I set the brakes and bailed out of the truck and started walking out toward them . They turned and started trotting away . I yelled for them to stop cause I wanted to talk to them buy they kept going . Being unarmed and mad walking toward 2 people with shotguns I thought afterwards was not to bright .

I snorted a couple lines, drank a quart of ole #7 and smoked a walrus then decided to go hustle the pool table st my buddy's bar.
I had 2 games going just having a great time.
I hussled an idiot and his 2 buddies.
They took me for a couple hundred bucks then he decided he wanted all my money, so I says how about $100.00 per ball.
Well my buddy the bar owner James just grinned, we have James the money and I told James to rack 'em up for me, he got 'em real tight.
Idiot says OK, you can break. I called 8 ball in left side pocket, perfect shot.
I win!
I collect my money and turn toward the other table to shoot.
That SOB shot me in the back with one of those little .22s that used to come in belt buckles.
Now I am mad, I grab idiots little gun, he pulls the trigger, the little firing pin on the hammer goes through the web by the thumb in my right hand, so I now have a pistol with the barrel sticking out the bottom of my hand and I am steady poking holes in this guys head while setting on his chest.
James and a coupke other guys pull me off him telling me I'm killing him. I told James he was trying to kill me.
James makes the other 2 set down and gives me a 15 minute head start. Stupid spent a couple weeks in the hospital.
About an hour I showed up ready to party.
My Mother, bless her heart, dug the bullet out and poured iodine in it.
That was my last hustle.
Signed, Lucky.

Ted,
Old #7 made me do some really stupid things when I drank alcohol, but fortunately nothing ever with a firearm. It was just three beers that allowed me to shoot a bullet thruogh the glass door of a thankfully closed for the weekends restaurant when I didn’t check the chamber of a Ruger 10/22. I quit all forms of alcohol immediately after that incident.

Been shot once accidently by my uncle while grouse hunting in the 80s. We had jumped a covey of grouse as they flew over my side of the trail he didnt shoot he also forgot to put his gun back on safe. He stopped to pee and I continued on as he was walking to catch up to me he hit the trigger and shot me in the back. it burned like hell fire. Ive had a few bullets whiz past me while deer hunting on state land, one was intentional from a hunter who was yelling at me because I was "in his spot" a couple hundred yards across a clear cut. my moms neighbors were out shooting one day. As I was walking up the drive way I had a couple bullets whiz VERY close past my head, just as I went to duck down I had one hit the bill of my baseball cap knocking it off my head. I yelled over to them, picked up my cap and went over and chewed them a new one. They apologized several times. the distance between the houses at that time was about 5 acres

Oh yeah. Just remembered that a ricochet from a bullet jacket fragment I shot from a 1911 in 45ACP hit my best in the left arm. The shot was on a 6” round steel plate horizontal swinger at about 20’ or so that he and I were both shooting at flipping it from right to left, back and forth. The bullet jacket fragment broke the skin just enough to stick in his arm. He kept it as a reminder for years. He still some twenty years later still talks about it how I shot him.

And I just again remember where I was shooting at a bowling pin with a friend’s 870 with 12 gauge Foster type slugs at about 20’, again, and the plastic wad ricocheted back and hit my right elbow cutting a crescent which bled, and kept bleeding for hours every time I moved my arm. I’m starting to believe that shooting at things from 20’ is not advisable.

Hello Susan.
Being shot and or being shot at is purely subjective. In the moment the only person that really cares is the one that is being shot or shot at. Nobody else really cares because basically it is NOT happening to them. AND the person shooting at you obviously does not give a hoot either. I guess that in that moment You the shootee should feel special? Just making light of the analysis. At the time I did NOT feel special.. I was really quite angry! After that, it leaves an ugly scar which then leads to stupid questions. To me the ugly scar just fit my regular appearance and that has enough stupid questions already. I do not do anything to enhance my existing looks. Shoulder length snow white hair and beard wearing my Undertaker Top Hat usually dressed in black. I have NO vanity and a couple bullet scars.... who cares???
I am just me... and I am not important..... lol

Years ago as a Security Officer for a camping resort, I was shot at one night around Halloween. I did not see who shot at me, but it sounded as if they were shooting a .22 at me. Even a small round as that, when it whistled by me I hit the ground quick! I never did see the person shooting at me so I could not return fire. All in all, I have been shot at that one time but have had shots fired in my vicinity but not at me specifically, several times.
