I am setting up to load .40 S&W for a friend. The question is how many grains of Unique should I use, I can only find 180gr FMJ and the only power I have is Unique. Speer shows data for Jacketed Gold Dot Hollow Point can I safely use the 6.7 gr Unique starting with FMJ the same weight.

I believe you are misreading your book. Both the Alliant data, which I linked, and my copy of Speer #12 says 6.7 is MAX for the 180, not starting. HUGE DIFFERENCE in those two terms.

Starting load is 6.0. Minimum Overall Length of cartridge - 1.12 inches.

Thanks for the heads up. I got the Lyman Handbook down and spotted my error right away. I'm still a long way from having all the components, bullets are on order, dies are backordered, brass is ordered if it all gets here in the next couple of months I'll still be sol because I have no small pistol primers. Still a long ways from a hand mangle mistake.
