    ON THIS DAY

On March 17, 1942, Gen. Douglas MacArthur arrived in Australia from the Japanese
invaded Philippines to become supreme commander of Allied forces in the southwest
Pacific theater during World War II.

As the story goes, and presumably embellished over the years, this was in the time
period that 'General Mac' told President Roosevelt that he needed thousands more
of those "rag-tag construction workers who can't wear a navy uniform properly or
even conform to the most basic of military commands or regulations to win this war brought
upon us"! During that same time period the word SEABEE was coined as a acronym for
Construction Battalions (CB) and some illustrator over with the Rhode Island navy civilian
ranks drew the original flying figure with machine gun, hammer, and wrench...today,
alive, well, and the Seabee is still flying! Chief

Ah well....MacArthur was the prima donna of prima donna's. Brilliant tactician and fearless in battle....with an inflated sense of self importance to go along with the virtues.
