I recently picked up this Old Hopkins and Allen single shot 12ga shotgun. I'd like to use it as a turkey gun. It takes 2 3/4 shells obviously no magnum rounds. My question is this, with the age of this firearm should shooting modern 12ga 2 3/4 rounds be safe for this firearm?

If the barrel is good steel and is marked for 2 3/4 shells it should be safe to shoot after being checked out by a gunsmith. H&A went bankrupt in 1916 so it is quite possible the chamber is shorter than 2 3/4. Just because a 2 3/4 shell fits doesn't mean it's chambered for them since shotgun shells are measured fired. Just sayin.

I wanted to include pictures if that helps. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I believe after research this is either a model 712 or 912 with serial number T3348 and a 30 inch barrel. Would a 16 gauge barrel fit on this gun?
