How many of you practice hand to hand fighting or a type of martial arts?
Seems a lot of incidents happen at a range where you're gonna have to fight to be able to draw your weapon. Or you may need the skills so the BG can't take your weapon from you.
Do you train for this situation?

I do have to admit, I have not done any hand to hand in quite some time.

Been teaching Ali and her friends basic joint manipulations, toe stomp/eye gouges, punches(they need to do some strength training )
Havn't felt like getting it on with my stepdad in a while. We usually go at it pretty good, but he's 6'2" 240lbs, I'm 5'11" 185-190lbs, and it can get interesting because he'll use his body weight against me. Try to smother me to death I need to go make him mad tomorrow

We train in "civilized" takedowns for those time when we must physically restrain someone. In reality, when that does happen all bets are off and it gets pretty uncivilized.

I initially trained in Judo in the Army, and later Military training incorporated styles from several disciplines, most of it was geared to permanent damage, so never really learned any moves or techniques, just hit hard-fast and often, kick-bite, thumb in the eye type of stuff,

The maxim I live by...
95% of all situations you get into AND out of by using your brains and your mouth.
4.99% of them is what god gave you FEET to walk (run) away for...
The remainder is why you have a CCW...
In reality, IMHO, many people trained in martial arts SOMETIMES too quickly move from the "brains/mouth" to action, and ignore the "feet" option.
Now this is for civilians, obviously.

I was trained in self defense/offensive martial arts in my youth both inside and outside of service. I haven't practiced or done any formal training for the past 20 years; however, there is still some basic instinctual reactions that are triggered when I am startled or someone sneaks up on me. My kids learned at an early age to circle around and catch my eye when they wanted to get my attention, rather than walk up behind me and yell. Also, shortly after we were married, I laid my wife out flat once when she did that - she didn't know what the hell happened, but learned quick about my trigger. Some life dependent reactionary skills when reinforced by real life experience never go away ----

Yeah, Bob, I've also learned not to do that to my wife when she has a spatula full of fried chicken greasy pan scrapings...or a knife, or any other sharp object for that matter
I guess in my floorwalker days I was just lucky. Every unarmed "fighter" or "runner" I caught gave up when I put the shoulder into the ribcage. 240# of Polish in the chest worked wonders, it's a wonder I never broke any ribs.
BUT, thinking about it, if any of those guys (or gals) would've known anything, or even brought up a knee, I'da been down.
Every runner ALWAYS stopped, turned and tried a wild roundhouse punch. I just ducked under and kept running...slam.
Whenever I had a knife pulled on me, though, I usually let them keep the stuff...
Luckily, every gun I found was after in the search, never had one pulled on me.
Looking back, all the stuff we did catching shoplifters 20 years ago was pretty dumb, especially for the $2.65/hr I started at...all we were authorized at the time was cuffs, mace, and blackjacks. But in reality, you needed nothing but your brains and mouth, and in the end that's all we were allowed.
