Is this a good deal on M&P Sport II for $787? My first AR-15
Looking for my first AR-15 and have pretty much decided on a Smith and Wesson M&P Sport II and have seen lots of sites and stores selling for over $900. I won't mention the online store, but I did find it for $787 in stock. Seems like a good price given today's skyrocketing prices.
1. What do you think about the M&P for a first AR-15? Seems to get really good reviews, though I've never spoken personally to anyone who has one. Online reviews are generally very positive for a rifle in this price range.
2. Do you think $787 is a fair price today? I've considered a Colt M4 6920 but it's just a little too expensive for my budget. Cost is one of the primary factors in choosing the M&P.

Either you got a bad one or he got a good one.Carried a S&W AR for several years at work. It went bang when you pulled the trigger. That's the nicest thing I can say about it. I'm not a fan at all. Least accurate AR I have ever had. Tried different ammo to no avail. My AR gunsmith went through it and the best he could come up with was the barrel was junk.
I had no choice as it was what we were issued. Hopefully S&W have begun to do a better job.
Good price for an entry level AR these days.
As much as I like my Rugers, I’ve not been impressed with reports on their ARs and they do a few proprietary things while the S&W is straight industry standard.
Personally I would have started at Palmetto State Armory by shopping for a separate lower & upper, the upper cam be shipped straight to your house & ship the lower to a FFL for transfer. Right now an entry level complete lower is $140 & five different complete uppers in the $260-$299 range.
Or shop locally for a complete lower and let the shop do the transfer the shop online for a complete upper. I bought my first AR as a complete RRA lower locally back in 2008 when everything was scarce, then went online and shopped around til I found what I wanted a few months later, which was a BCM upper. I’ve put BCM, RRA, PSA, Anderson, Radical Firearms, BCA & Ghost Firearms uppers on RRA, PSA, Anderson, Plum Crazy, Frontier & Mag Tactical lowers. They all fit fine, no issues. If you do get a loose fit an Accuwedge or an O ring on the rear lug will work.

I will add my two cents though here's what I learned it's much cheaper to buy a complete upper and a complete lower than it is to get them together.
If you're familiar with the AR platform it's literally two pins that you push out and push back in. That's it that completes assembly.
One of the thing that you might want to do is steer clear of steel case ammo until you well worn in the rifle.
Also if you do go with the two-piece way that I always do make sure your barrel length is 16 in or longer otherwise it's considered a pistol a pistol with a rifle stock is a problem according to the ATF for some stupid reason.
A shorter barrel with a brace is acceptable however it's now considered an AR-15 pistol.
One last thing if you do get a case jammed inside the chamber it's a pita to take out. Carry cleaning rod with you. You'll need it to put down the barrel and tap out that shell.
Enjoy the world of ARs they're fun to shoot.
