I have an IVER JOHNSONS ARMS & CYCLE WORKS FITCHBURG MASS. U.S.A. pistol (as marked on the top barrel rib), that I would like to know more about, specifically, is it safe to fire smokeless ammunition, and if so, how does one determine if it's chambered for .32 Colt vs. .32 S&W? It was given to me by my father-in-law (yob 1909) about 25 years ago; the pistol had been his mother's. It's a top break, 5-shot, cylinder free wheels when hammer is down; locks when hammer is cocked. The S/N, located under the left hard rubber grip (owl's head facing in 7:00 o'clock position) is S 72 553 (with spaces as shown). The S/N 72553 also appears on the bottom of the trigger guard. Barrel is 3", and there are two visible frame pins above the trigger assy, and a slotted screw below the hammer (which I assume is the hammer pivot), in addition to the break hinge slotted screw. The finish is either chrome or nickel; the trigger assy is blued. With the exception of a tiny flake off the rear of the front sight blade, the finish is near perfect. The pistol came with five, very corroded, cartridges which I believe were 32 Colt (I got rid of them long ago). The bottom of the grip strap is marked, in two lines:

    AT.JUNE 16.96 AUG. 25
    EPT. IC.04. PATS PEND

You have an 2nd Model Iver Johnson Safety Hammer Automatic Revolver made in 1908. It is the last year of manufacture for the 2nd Model and is considered a black powder frame. Smokeless ammo is not safe to fire in it. These were chambered in .32 S&W.

Thanks for the info on my pistol. Not that I really plan on shooting with it, but do you know of any source for black powder .32 S&W ammunition?
