Have a nickel-plated, 3 inch bbl, double top latch, hammerless, flat spring, safety triggered, free-wheeling cylinder, 38 SW, 5 shot revolver, owl faces forward, with matching serial #'s 12358 with either a R or H, my hunch is an R, letter prefix. Butt dates are: June.16.95.Aug.25.96, Pat.Pending My question: What is the manufacture date? Thank you in advance for any info!

You have a Iver Johnson 2nd Model 9th Variation Safety Hammerless Automatic manufactured in 1906. It is chambered in .38 S&W and is blackpowder frame, not safe for modern smokeless ammunition.

Bill Goforths book mentions the large frame hammerless made in 1906 should be a 10th Variation, but the patent dates that are on your frame are for the 9th Variation. It was the 1st year for the use of the R prefix so, its possible it was marked with the wrong patent dates.
