Legal black powder cartridge gun?

403 Views 16 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  felixthibault23
Hello, I am aware that it is perfectly legal to ship muzzleloading long guns straight to my door in the state of NY as I have done so myself. I was wondering if it would be legal to ship a long gun (shotgun) that fires black powder cartridges instead of modern smokeless powder shells. Any info would be appreciate.

It all depends on the date of manufacture. Pre-1898 is an antique and you can ship it to most places.

Post 1898 and you're going to have a problem.

This is one of my pet peeves

"Pre 1898". Actually it's pre 1899. A gun made in 1898 is still an antique - not a gun by federal law.

It's like people talk about junk silver. "I get a bunch of pre-64 quarters, because they're made out of silver instead of pot metal." But the 64 quarter is also made of silver. Pre-65 is what you want.

If you process through a LGS like a standard firearm it shouldn't matter either way. The year made applies but black powder cartridge guns are firearms and ball and caps are not but some states may have local laws that come into play.

IMO - best to talk to a law professional in your local.

You won't have a problem with the feds but New York might see things differently.

NY always does! :( They don't care about federal laws.
I understand If it’s an antique from pre 1899, but what if it’s a replica/reproduction of a pre 1899 gun as are all my replica muzzleloading rifles that I have. Thanks for all the replies too!
I didn't need to fill out a background check form when picking up a Pietta model 1851 Confederate Navy percussion cap revolver from Cabela's about....7.5 years ago now I think?

But, when picking up a brand new Henry H010B chambered in 45-70 and a 1907 Colt Single Action Army chambered in 44WCF both this year, both cartridges originally black powder, I had to have them shipped to my local FFL because they're still cartridge guns.

A reproduction of a pre 1899 cartridge gun will be classified as a modern gun.

Kinda stupid, ain't it. An unfortunate case of "if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, this time it ain't a duck."

But it identifies as a duck!!!! Shouldn't they let it be its true self?

As long as they aren't exposed to any transgender bud light commercials i think they will be safe to do their duck thing.

A little OT but, as Joe mentioned commercials, has anyone been totally, completely and thoroughly disgusted with the garbage commercials on Smithsonian Channel? I'm done with them, the perverts.

Guessing it's a good thing my family only gets local channels here?

I have kept a few ducks around for years. In fact they do seem to have some trouble with gender and species. Imagine the self righteous anger of a raped hen. Ducks not only have penises but they have, relative to size, the longest of all animals. They hang out and drag the ground. Look it up on the net. It is said that a duck can make a mess with a cup of water. I don't really think it takes that much.
