I went to the local gunshop three weeks ago and bought 900 small pistol primers for $4.99/100 (thats $49.99 per thousand). High priced I know but it was the only deal in town.

I went back today and saw nothing but large pistol primers and the price had jumped up to $6.99/100 (thats $69.99 per thousand). So in three weeks the price jumped up $2.00 per 100 or twenty dollars per 1000. I decided I couldn't afford to do business with them again, and went to the house.

Honestly it would be cheaper to buy them online and pay HazMat than to buy from them, assuming you could find them. I had quite a few large pistol primers here so I'm OK to pass on the deal.

I dropped in at Powder Valley the other day and saw large pistol primers for $28.00 per 1000. I should have gone ahead and bought a few but I hesitated. Went back the next day and they were gone.

Say I buy 5000 and compare the cost.

LGS - $69.99 per thousand
69.99 X 5 = $349.50
349.50 + 28.83 sales tax + 10.83 gas (50 mile round trip) = $389.16

Powder Valley $28.00 per thousand.
28.00 X 5.00 = $140.00
+ 25.00 hazmat + 15.00 FedEx ground (price is a guess) = $180.00

So to make a long story short. If I were order from Powder Valley I'd save $209.16 I guess you could say I'd make $209.16 sitting on my butt waiting for FedEx.

Depressing isn't it.

yes, its kinda sad. lets just hope that powder valley doesnt jump onboard the markup wagon. my LGS and only supplyer of relaoding close has not marked up any more than he has in the past. he always knew the right spot to stop. i like to do business with a local but,,,,,,,no need for greed amongsted friends.

as supplies come back, i will bet he goes back down to a decent price

If you can find some buddies who reload, you can save even more on the hazmat fees.

Even if you can find one person to go in with you, that is $12.50 saved.

I guess what I want to say is, if Powder Valley can make a profit selling primers at 28.00 / 1000 then there is no reason the LGS can't do the same. Other than, they are simply taking advantage of the consumer and pocketing the excess. I'm all for a guy making a profit, but this seems a little excessive ...... to me.

Bite me once, shame on you. Bite me twice, shame on me.
