I never had a real urge to own an M1 before now. They always seemed too expensive and never available for me. That changed today. As it turns out, one came in in a shipment of transfer guns from a pawn store in Las Vegas. I snagged it for myself, but due to a very busy day, haven't had a chance to give it a close exam. My question is this. Someone has ruined the stock by removing the painted "company numbers" by scraping them off with either a pocket knife or similar tool. They managed to not only ruin the finish but gouged the wood. The rifle is marked Springfield Armory on the receiver. I haven't had a chance to check it out further. I don't see this as being a collector weapon. I'm wondering whether refinishing the wood would be better or looking for a replacement stock is in order. No picture yet but maybe tomorrow.
