USS Minneapolis lost its bow after being torpedoed during the Battle of Tassafaronga on November 30, 1942. Working with Seabees on Tulagi, the crew camouflaged the ship with palms and then built a temporary bow with coconut logs. Stopping at Pearl Harbor for a new bow, the ship made it back to Mare Island for an overhaul and battle damage repairs. The Minneapolis was back in the fight by September, 1943.
