you are a musician, just because you own a guitar" (Jeff Cooper) A shot gun cant go with you as you retrieve the paper, let out the pets, mow the lawn, take out the garbage, etc. You dont answer the door with it, and you can't really have it at hand as you do much of anything else, to include use a flashlight, comfort a child, make a phone call to cops, open a door, look under a bed, etc. Have you ever fired a 12 ga in a small room? The blast, f and concussion are nearly bad enough to make you drop the gun. The flash is enough to really ruin your night vision. So you had better at least have the "valve" type of earplugs in place. Better yet, a $250 set of electronic earmuffs.

It's not your home that you are defending. It's your health, honor and freedom. Homes can be replaced, or done-without. Please explain to me why it's ok to defend yourself while you are at home, and not ok while you are at the post office or Mac's? Which place has a worse record for violence? Why is the handgun adequate for peace of mind in the street, (where you are 4x or more likely to be attacked) and not adequate while at home? You can easily end up in a rassling match if you are attacked, and a handgun is a lot easier to hang onto if that is the case. 90+% of the time, the attacker stops without your having to shoot him, anyway. Did you know that? There is a whole lot more to effective self defense than just owning a gun. At typical indoor ranges, your target will be less than 10 ft from the muzzle of your 12 ga. Your pattern will be only 1.5" or less wide, quite often. So it is really little or no help at hitting anyone.

buckshot is pretty expensive to practice with. For those who won't practice a lot, I recommend a 9mm or .45 carbine, loaded with MagSafe prefrag ammo, so it wont be as likely to shoot thru 3-4 apartments or mobile homes. 9mm ammo,in particular, is very low cost, and many indoor ranges dont welcome the shotgunner. The 9mm carbine's blast and recoil is so minimal that practice with a .22 really does =ability with the 9mm carbine. That is not true of the .22 and the 12 ga, however.

12ga. with 7's/8's are fine for home defense with low
recoil and less report.

well there is one problem with having a handgun.... im not even 18 yet and i cant get a handgun till i am 21! so yes a 12gauge will do better than nothing at all... i will get a handgun when i can, but i will still be using my shotgun for defense in my home!

Ballistic, look into getting a BP revolver.

JR,

A BP handgun when loaded, would still be considered
as a handgun in the possesion of an under age person,
especially if he used it in a self defense scenario.

This of course does depend on mainly the state
definitions of where one resides, and local also.
