I saw a cute little .22 bolt action rifle (with a clip) at Walmart. Has a neat little scope on it and it's small and light weight.

Under $100. Mom said she wanted to learn how to shoot and I thought immediately of this little rifle.

The ammo is cheap (I've got like over 1,000 rounds) and between it and the Beretta .22 handgun could show her a lot.

What do you guys think? I know she's almost 65 but better late than never.

Would it be worth it getting the little rifle to work with her on?

TL, how could you go wrong. If she doesn`t like it, you have a new toy. I am a .22 fanatic. You have seen all the "if you could have one gun" "survival" "what would you chose" ect. ect. ect. In the end the lowly .22 will do it all and is not loud, recoil heavy, heavy and ammo is light and easy to carry boatloads of it. Will it shoot 300 yards? NO! will it kill big game, a 50 yard head shot says yes. I have used one for the better part of 40 years and have yet to find something it would not drop with the right shot placement. Many a deer in Texas has been brought down by this micro round....large hogs too. I drilled a 318lbs hog three years ago, at 40 yards while squirrel hunting with a .22......just above the ear with a trunicated solid, dropped like a rock. Fear the lowly .22, it has killed and been used more than any other round ever made. LTS

Well, I went and got it - went through the usual time consuming wait - though the NICS check took a total of 3 minutes here in Idaho. We just call them in. But of course I bought it at Walmart so I had to wait for a Manager to come up with the rifle, sign all the paperwork and then escort me out of the store. Nice kid, kept calling me ma'am. Had a grand chat on the way out. Loaded it in the trunk and then went back in to find mom (god she can travel with one of those electric carts!).

Anyhow the gun is still basically for me - I needed a light weight rifle to practice with and to figure out how to use a scope - this rifle came with a cheap 4x15 Tasco so it'll teach me how not to get a black eye.

southernfreedom - was hoping it would work to teach mom with. I've got bigger weapons but not what I'd want to start someone her age on.

Okay and let's be honest - I wanted a little plinker that I could practice aim on and use cheap bullets - those .303 and 8mm shells get very expensive.

TallTLynn: Well, it is a good firearm to teach your mom on. My wife will not shoot
my "big guns" (yet :) but loves the Ruger 10/22. OBTW, if you only have 1000 rounds of .22 ammo you have a severe shortage of that ammo!! ;-)

T, you need to have at least 10 bricks of .22 ammo AT ALL TIMES!!!!! (5000) rounds, because it isn't unusual to go through ALL of that in a day, especially shooting with friends. Did they bore-sight the scope for you? If not, these guys will walk you through it.....there are different ways of doing it, somebody's is probably much better than mine!

timberbeast - WalMart sight something in??? Hell, the scope isn't even attached to the rifle - I've got to figure how to put it on (god help us all).

For now the scope stays off and iron sights only. I do believe and it has been confirmed by others that it would be the best way to teach mom.

That and I need to do a lot of practice that way before I learn to use a scope.

    Oops, I'm sorry 44rugerfan - it's a Savage.

Nice little rifle all in all and should do the job. Now I just need to go buy another 5 or 6,000 rounds of ammo (oh lordy)!

Would think the little one was just about ready to go with dad and see what it's like. He's a fine son.

Ditch that scope and get one with a 1" tube both Tasco and Simmons have entry level 4X32 and 3X9X32 scopes that work well on 22's. The scope you have will cause you grief and will not do you much good for practice on larger guns, the tube and objective lens are too small to give you a decent FOV. Hope this didn't sound harpy it wasn't meant to.

fredneck - nay you ain't harping but telling the truth. The scope isn't worth a lot if anything in my opinion - one of the reason's I'm not in a hurry to put it on.

Not real keen on Tasco scopes anyway -never have been. Besides why would I need a scope on a little .22 rifle???

    I love armed wimmin'

How come you don't like Tasco scope's. I have one on my Remington 22.250 and you can put a round through a knats ass at 200 yards with it. Did you have a bad experience with one???

Anyway I think that what you are doing with your mother is just outstanding, it shows the kind of person that you really are....

Bondai - more of I don't like scopes period. I keep getting black eyes - that'll teach me.

But this one really is a cheap little scope - no matter how you look at it. Still it will be a good start for me when I get into scope work - if I can figure it out then I can use any scope when I'm done.

Have one good scope still - it's a White Star - sweet scope if I can just remember where it got packed off to - problably my Uncle's storage shed over at his place along with a lot of other stuff I need to get out of there (sigh).

As for mom - well she decided she wanted to learn - she shot one rifle a very long time ago (probably when I was a baby) and has never shot anything since. She'll never be able to shoot a heavy weapon but if I can get her into the lighter stuff I'll feel a little better (and then I won't worry about her accidently picking up a gun and shooting something without thinking - one of the reasons most of my guns are unloaded right now).
