I was given an old Iver Johnson single shot 12 guage shotgun by a friend of mine. The barrel is 30" long, and it has a ring pull breech mechanism. There is a serial number stamped into the barrel, and another one stamped on the trigger guard....and they don't match?! The number on the barrel is 4039, and the number on the trigger guard is 5440. I'm suspecting these were not a matched pair, but I don't know how they did the numbering back then. I would like to know the manufacture date of this gun, and its approximate value.

It was made before 1909, and I do think you will be able to narrow down the exact year of manufacture. They did not keep as good as records for their shotguns. I believe these are considered to be black powder. You should not attempt to use modern smokeless shells. Mismatched numbers is not that big of a deal. Its over 110 years old.

These do not bring a great deal of money, $100-$150 depending on condition.
