I decided to completely clean my old Winchester Model 74. I decided to removed the external mag tube from the stock. In doing so I noticed there was a spring mounted into a hole drilled into the inside bottom of the stock.
Once cleaned and I tried to reassemble the tube to the stock, I couldn't compress the spring properly to fit under the ext. mag tube. I hope I've been accurate enough in my description of the problem. Apparently, the spring fits underneath the distal end of the mag tube. I can get the tube over the spring but it slips off to one side and doesn't support the tube. Any 'smiths out there that can give me a pearl to help this reinstall? Wants the trick?

I've checked youtube for any videos on this subject but none popped up.
Any info appreciated.

I have two Winchester Model 63 .22LR- same tube feed through the buttstock as on the cheaper M74-- I am wondering what the function of this special spring- a coiled spring I am guessing here, has-- the M63 does not have such a device in the feed tube assembly-- I would suggest you go to the Numrich Gun Parts site, go to Winchesters and look at the schematic for the M74- that might help--

I need to see pics.!!
I am not sure what spring you are talking about.
There are no springs that "fit under the mag tube"and what does "the distal end" mean?
Are you talking about the Timing rocker?
