    Read all about it: www.nytimes.com/2002/07/1...1WREC.html

No matter what you think of John F. Kennedy as a politician and a president, at that time, and at that place, he was a hero.

I dunno X, at the time there was talk of courtmartialing him for it, and his old man pulled his chestnuts out of the fire AGAIN by pulling in favors owed to him by the press making him out the hero before the investigation was complete, because you can't courtmartial a "Hero..."

Now don't get me wrong, everything he did AFTER the collision to save his men was documented, and witnessed, and can never be taken away from him...even stupid people CAN be brave.

But the fact remains, his father got him a cushy safe desk job in Washington, he got in trouble for screwing the civilian female help rather publicly, the Navy wanted to run him out on a rail because of the scandal, Papa Joe pulled strings to get him reassigned, the Navy "buried" him in PTs, he WAS a piss poor sailor as well as Navy Officer without a very good war record up to that point, he messed up the initial radar torpedo run on the Jap DD in the fog, which was pretty easy to do, BUT instead of staying on mufflers, turning away and coming around again for another run, because the Japs NEVER even knew he was there, he panicks, kicks in the Packards and turns IN to the Jap to engage it with his unauthorized "Barge Bopping" US Army 37mm AT gun on his foredeck, which probably would NOT have hurt the DD even if he could have hit it with the intended for direct fire on LAND telescopic AT sights in the fog...thus CAUSING the collision and the loss of his boat and the death and injury of his crew by his poor decision and actions...

ANY loss of a US ship under questionable circumstances is investigated by a court of inquiry, and if it was ANYBODY else the odds would have been better than 50-50 there's a courtmartial....

But Papa Joe not only saved his ass but set the stage for the "Naval Hero" story for his future political gain...

Maybe if they DO raise it the real story will come out...but don't hold your breath. The fawning press will make him out to be a larger than life hero AGAIN, and the BS PR propaganda movie will probably be shown again and again....

Polish, 90% of what you have said above.....is the myth that continues to this day. He was far from being any sort of hero. Zero, maybe. LTS
