I’ll have to run a cost analysis on this. At the cost of lumber today it might be more efficient to spend the $500 on metal one. :p Actually have a little stash of walnut and cherry and most of all time. I think I could thump one together short of $500.

I just take mine in a plastic tool box when I go to a range. The boxes look a little bulky to carry and transport.

These were pretty popular back in the 20s - 40s. Now that's a range box 👍

The links to range box plans above are great. A ton of other woodworking projects for firearm enthusiasts too. Using wood, however, makes for a travelling range box that is heavier and larger than necessary. Please do not get me wrong, I DO plan on building some display/storage cases that demonstrate my woodworking skills. Wood is more ...."romantic"?
If any members would like to input their ideas, we might design a lighter, smaller more portable range box utilizing modern materials, namely plastic and foam. What should be included in a handgun range box? A rifle range box? Is a spotting scope required for pistol? Ear protection, eye protection, tools, oil, targets, magazines, box ammo, cleaning cloths.2 or 3 handguns? The box pictured below might be a good platform to start with. Unfortunately, came with the foam already cut out, and the holes for locks are pretty small. Loaded as you see it it is pretty heavy. But if we set it up, or something similar, for a range box it might be light enough to carry on an over the shoulder sling. There is a guy at the range that uses a small roll around suitcase.
