I am trying to ID a butt plate that I found in the bottom of an old/empty gun case. I believe it may have come off a a Winchester 1893, but there is a number stamped on the inside/bottom (3147). Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks in advance!

Well, it's not a 93, 'cause a 93 is a pump shotgun. That plate design screams "rifle", and the hole in the middle is a trapdoor leading to a long hollow in the stock where a cleaning rod was carried.

Could be a 1873 (that's my best guess), but could also be from a 1876.
