This may have been addressed sometime in the past, but I ran across this site which gives some pointers on how to fight effectively with a shotgun. Only takes a few minutes to go thru the lesson, and refreshed my memory from back in the day. Thought it might be useful for some folks, especially those that might be new to guns generally.

This part applies to more than just shotguns.

If we engage a bad guy (BG), we will shoot him until he STOPS what ever he is doing that threatens our life.

If he continues to threaten us after being shot, what do we do?

Answer: Shoot him some more.

When he STOPS, we stop shooting.

skeet shooting helps your overall shotgun skills, I practice my tactical reloads on the skeet field each week to stay frosty. practice, practice, practice...

A pump is the only way to go in my book for a combat/HD shotgun. Autos jam, period. Doubles are limited to, well, two.

but overall, that's some good common sense pointers, it's a good start for someone new to shotguns.
