You have one of the Strong Firearms Company salute cannon. few were manufactured as a field piede. The great majority were on mahogany naval carriages and were used as yacht salute cannons. The were offered in various calibers/gauges for blanks - .45-70, 12 Gauge, 10 gauge, 8 gauge, 4 gauge, 2 gauge, 1 1/2 gauge( 2") 1 gauge and larger. Above that I do not know gauges but Strong made brass cartridges for theit larger cannons.

The original Strong Cannon in New Haven Ct went away when sailing yachts went away probably a hundred years ago.

Amoskeag just sold a number of Strong cannons from my collection last month. I had 13 from 12 gauge to 1 3/8"
Welp, for my money sailing yachts could make a huge come back any day!!! I love sailing. My problem is anything much bigger than 24 ft. is too big for yachting in Missouri. 'Course, I'm getting too long of tooth to be playing that game anyway, with anything much bigger than about 18 ft. Actually, the little 12 ft. Widgeon I had would be perfect for today. Then the problem becomes, where would I put the salute/signal cannon?............... :giggle:
